I like the term 'float', having myself been impressed with a gawdawful-crude but similar-working er adaptation toward the same goal.

Piloon, I had done well thinking I had three 'cross-bars' and discovered a fourth when actually looking under its deck. I agree that at least a third cutting edge, and plenty of f/b length best approaches the er longitudinal evenness a fs grader could offer.

btw: My 'prototype' contains the scrapings of the (two) rear cutter(s) and floats up vs passing them and digging deeper, self-adjusting in its way. I suggest it works so well without added weight mostly because the cutting edges are the narrow edges of the a-irons. Wear so far is perhaps limited by lack of o'all weight, but that makes hooking-up all the easier.

The float pictured seems obviously capable of serious upgrade work, with more weight as needed for enhanced digging power and faster leveling. IMHO, whatever half-start one had to work with it could do a lot with each pass and never require much fuss to use at any level of improvement up to PM. :thumbsup: IMO it's nice enough to copy. So who will?

Guys, this is not BCP's float. He saw the ad on Craig's List, and thought it would be interesting to share it here. I think it's a cool idea for people who can't afford or find grader blades, and can see where it would work for at least light duty leveling.

I really like the idea of using logs and chains rather than fixed pieces and I think I know where on Ebay I can some 60" cutter blades for about $50-60 each and maybe this will be enuff to keep my driveway in shape wiyhout blowing the close to $2K I would need to for a Land Plane.

Do you think it would work at least reasonably well on my gravel drive if I edge it with real hardened cutter blades meant for the job?

Yep, I know lots of people don't care about spelling, and misspelling can be used to indicate a tone, as I did in the first sentence. My point is that the post was done without any explanation as to why it was done. I know bcp is a TBN member in good standing and experienced. He did not, however, comment on why he posted it...which would have helped out...without this, we don't know if he thinks it is a good deal, a good idea which we might copy (have used floats/scrapers of various materials myself), or if this is something he is selling (he and the CL item are both in Wa).

Following my post, bcp edited his to make it clear the grader is not his...thanks, bcp!

bcp, I gotta tell you, you need to so some serious spelling review. This is a SCRAPER. And STRENGTH is what it has. And we won't even go near starting sentences with a capital letter... or other lack of capitals. Guess I'm a little offended that you used TBN to advertise world wide for an item which clearly is already your personal item. And, if not your personal item, am wondering why you bothered to put on TBN.

PhysAssist, I think it would. The key, IMO, is having enough weight to keep the contraption from just bouncing around or riding over the tough spots.

When I moved into my new house, all I had was my GT235 garden tractor. I used this pallet I found in a construction dumpster to prep my yard for laying sod. It was free except for the cost of a few feet of 1/4" chain and the hardware to attach it. I eventually added some weight to the top of it to make it bounce around less. It took a lot of passes to level the yard, but it worked well.

Dad had a wooden road drag when I was a kid, worked very well! Going from memory, it was made with two 4" x 12" (maybe bigger) timbers on edge with metal cutting blades, probably 8' or so wide. He pulled it with a chain with a big ring in the middle (which I still have) & adjusted the angle with the chain.

He later had an factory all steel drag, which is the only thing I regret sending to the scrap after selling his machinery! ~~ Lowell

Thanks, we once found that dragging a bunch of limbs we had cut off a fallen tree down to our brush pile behind the box blade gave us the smoothest gravel drive we ever had.

Maybe I'll see what a drag like that will do for us.
