Slip clutch vs shear pin for bush hog

The power rating of a tractor has very little to do with its tree killing abilities when stating that the tree only needs to be bent over and stressed to make it easy to cut down. I recently witnessed what a 35 HP 7 ton excavator can do and after that am sure with weight in the right spot killing an 8 inch tree would be relatively easy. I know that I personally have seen many a tree run over in the bottoms by a f150 and a ram charger.

:thumbsup: I did some "rose bushes" that were about 2/3 that size. Very satisfying, if somewhat painful. The high tricycle goes on thru like a knife on wheels. Gotta go real slow hunker down, and fend off the top branches. ... The full 45 PTO HP was used to make a normal height pass with the 5 foot hog. Even in 1st gear it lost some RPM.

I just bought a slip clutch from Tractor supply. It looks like a very good one.
PTO Slip Clutch, 1-3/8 in. 6 in. Spline Shaft - Tractor Supply Co.
I paid 179.00 which seems higher than they are when I look online.
Does anybody know if they are better than what they sell at Agri-supply or other places?

Yep. That was the size of the biggest ones down near the ground. Bark included of course. As I said the 8" trees were not oak - unidentified probably poplar.

You, with helper, and any chain saw would be hopelessly outclassed by a 45HP axe. Im not saying you go out planning on a lot of 6" stuf. But if you encounter a few among the standard 4" fare, dealing with each in less than a minute rolling over them forward and leaving them cut, delimbed and at least partially shredded gets the work done.

Iv never seen a telephone pole that was that small so just went out and measured 5. The tiniest I could find was 9" at ground level - others ranging up to 12". These are seasoned poles - all wood - and are sunk 5' into the ground. These dont compare with green trees. A tree is not as inherently stiff, and also has less wood because AFAIK bark is included in tree dia. Also, the root ball is shallow and will tip.

No 8" pole will stop anything but [maybe] a Smart car dead in its tracks from 50. A 4000lb car will chop a 5 foot section right out of an 10+" pole at that speed leaving the rest of the pole sitting on the dashboard held upright by the wires. Happened in front of my house where I used to live.

Have to tell ya being a retired electric lineman there ARE utility poles in the ground that are 7-8 inches across.Some are from the 1940,s & 50,s class 35-7 poles.
