Is a dually needed?

and yeah, I clipped a curb, just a little curb. :ashamed: I'm sure it hurt my pride more than it did that tire. In my defense we were coming out of an overflow parking lot that only the dealer car parkers used, so boy clearance was tight. Swing out, swing out...

Curbs were meant to be run over. The other alternative is creaming something on the other side.

From the owner " cheapest tires , slow out of the gate " My other brand came with Michelin tires, turns 1800 at 70 MPH also sunroof, nav, heated and cooled seats for same amount of money. Compare all brands before writing 50K + check.

Daugen,

congrats on the truck you'll love it. I just ordered a ram 5500 with 204" frame for a 3 rd box truck for my company. I have had absolutely great service from all of my rams. I don't know what part of NC you might be moving to but I can tell you the best dealer I have ever dealt with for rams if you're interested.

NC Redneck,

Ever heard of torque management? These trucks aren't built to drag race or burn the tires off of. How about you congratulate the man like everyone else and quit being such a child.

Come on, man...

He bought the truck, he likes the truck, be happy for him and wish him well.

Daugen, nice rig!

Really... Guys if it is over 10,000lbs go dually. Heck if you even have to wonder, error on the safe side. It would be kind of stupid to die or kill a mini van full of kids because you thought your one ton single wheel rig could do a real trucks job.

OP did the right and morally correct thing.

Fordman and others, thanks. If I were staying where I am, a dually would be impossible. But I'm moving to a farm, will have no problem parking it there, under cover, and for the occasional trip to Home Depot or the Kubota dealer, well except for backing a semi into a loading dock (I did that once and boy did I embarrass myself in front of the "real" drivers" who patiently watched while I jerked around...) I shouldn't have a problem navigating with it.

I still have my one Head West trip to finish. And if I'm going to pull a trailer through the Rockies, after all the effort of driving that gas motorhome through the Eastern mountains, I felt I sure err on the side of mass and get the "bigger" one. Well one thing for sure, as scarce as these things are used around here, if I ever don't like and want to sell it, there should not be any problem there.

I was surprised that the holes in the truck bed for the fifth wheel hitch were not covered. Just left open for leaves and junk to get in. I'm going to get a hard folding tonneau cover for it, had a BakFlip once and liked it, but now there are lots of competing brands. That, some big mudflaps, door steps, and a nice tan pin stripe and I should be good to go. the truck was filthy when I saw it, hopefully it will clean up nicely. white is, well, white...

Hmmm, this must be the biggest hitch size, off to get another part. 2 5/16 instead of 2? Getting a good collection of hitch balls; I use both the smaller sizes, not sure if I'll use the biggest. The whole point of towing something heavy in this truck was to use the fifth wheel, or a gooseneck hitch for an equipment trailer.
will need another big drop down; like the suburban the receiver is way up there.

doesn't look like any way easy to climb up into this bed. Yes NC/Scott, GM has some nice features, like those steps in the bumper. Ford had that swing out step, I guess Ram thinks I'm sprier than I am...oh well,if I need a little step ladder, I'll carry it.

guys, I think NC/Scott was just trying to watch my back, not bash. The problem is that equipment levels can vary hugely on these things so comparing pricing isn't so easy. Mine does not have a sunroof, nor did I want one. I literally never use it, so why have the complexity and the weight? though weight isn't much of an issue here for sure.

so far, I think I'm headed to the Greenville-Washington area of the Inner Banks NC. Two Ram dealers, checked that out, plus a Kubota and John deere. What more could a guy want? :D

I highly recommend the "Cosco" [NOT Costco] brand from HD, etc. Aluminum, light, folds easily, locks when unfolded, fairly sturdy. I try to keep one with the truck at all times.

thanks newbury. I'll check it out. the really nice lightweight one I bought for my motorhome is just silly big, need a three footer.
It might be the same brand. Nice finish, very lightweight but felt strong. As an ex fireman, I like good ladders...
Now wouldn't it be nice if Ram used that big open dually fender space for a swing out ladder that folded down to the ground.
of course I could always install a hydraulic lift on the back...:D

sadly I'm not kidding. I'm sitting here about to go field mowing with braces on both my wrists, a soft collar on and a back brace.
Leaping up onto pickup beds that are very high is something I did with ease thirty years ago. Now it looks like a mountain.
That little ladder will do nicely I'm sure. And fit on the floor in the back seat if I keep it clean.

the fields are calling, have a great weekend.

I prefer the "loose" ladder, right now it's in my shop being used as a step ladder to access molding on an 8' ceiling.

Yea, my F350 came with BFG A'S and at 1900 rpm it runs 79 mph but I have 3.73 gears.

I should have posted this here instead of in "good morning" so I'm cheating and repasting. But pics are here...

why it should take three hours to get out of a dealership with a new vehicle, though they did do the courtesy trade for me.
and get this. With no prior notice, oh, we are required by law to do a safety inspection of your suburban, which looked and is like new at 12K miles,
before we can sell to your friend. 75 dollars. yeah, I just let it sit for a moment, it was so absurd to charge me that when I'm buying a 50K+ truck.
But we can charge the buyer. No. No way. So I ate the seventy five bucks and was supposed to pay for it on the way out at Service, for some reason they could not put it on the bill. Maybe it was illegal....
and I forgot to stop, the truck was blocking everything and so when I got home I called them.

ok, so I get home and the honest person I am I call the Service dept and try to pay the 75 bucks. Oh, off to the cashier. That will be 86 dollars and change sir.
Say what? 6% tax ma'am, oh, an environmental disposal fee of what? A rag disposal fee of what?
Grrrrrrr. No, I'll pay the 75 plus tax and that's it. They agreed. Smart people.

half an hour later I got a call back from the salesman/mgr who apologized for the confusion but they all agreed internally to throw out the entire inspection bill because my suburban was so pristine and they basically did zero to check it over.

and this was after finding an additional 299 on the invoice for glass etching. I read every line like a hawk. You really have to. Such a ripoff. Oh but it's already on. Sorry, not paying for it. Five times in my memory this family of dealerships has tried that stunt with me and five times i have refused to pay for it. But they seem to welcome me back...

basically a well oiled and tuned gauntlet of folks doing their level headed best to get into your wallet. Even more...

pretty easy truck to figure out, more sophisticated but not much more complicated than the suburban, which for me means good design. Function over form.
but it is annoying to see "text" options. The factories are pushing unsafe practices on us, phones and texting while driving kill people, plain and simple. So do other things, but why add to the list? They make the cars and trucks ever so much safer, and then allow the driver to be utterly distracted? Illogical, Spock.

My experience with the local Chevy dealer, same dealership chain, wasn't good and I've been buying mostly GM for 15+ years, wanted a change. And the Cummins motor, boosted to 850 torque pounds, is quite peppy when one puts the foot to it. The ride is fair, and will be better when the Bilstein shocks I bought for it are installed. well, now to find a cheap price locally on the blue stuff, DEF. Very small blue fill hole right next to the diesel filler, which is now capless which never made much sense to me.

I was particularly pleased to find out late yesterday that someone had backed the truck into something, leaving a tiny dimple in bottom of the rear fender, which was the only part of the truck not waxed. I'm guessing the detail guy saw the dent, stopped to ask someone about it and was told to hurry up and get the truck out. Nice.
Hard to spot, but annoying and shows lack of integrity on the employees. They knew that truck had a dent...and everyone was quiet as a mouse to get it delivered.
Sadly, this is what I expect out of most dealerships.

well....some pics of my new white whale sitting in my driveway, where it itches to go out and do some work. Funny, I need a hundred pound bag of contractor grass seed. do i take the truck or the car? Lets see, I can put three tons back there...might be more grass seed than I need...:D

The dealer did not know the bed came with plastic caps to fill the fifth wheel holes, so I did that myself, not hard.
and I did take my small lightweight ladder and strapped it into the bed. It will be nice when I get a hard cover on it, one of the tri or four fold ones.

might get some time to fuss with it today. Am off to do some ground leveling at the farm with my box blade, and the toolboxes are now in the truck, so I'll be truckin' later I guess. one thing for sure, 8000 pounds does not seem to mind potholes; seems to just drive over them without incident.
