Nice choice. I got nothing but good things to say about Rugers.

Nice choice. That's a lot of gun for a first pistol. He will need a little help starting out.

Save as much brass as you can. Even if he doesn't reload, it can be traded when you accumulate enough of it. Of course I still recommend getting into metallic reloading.

Ruger Single Six in stainless with 22 LR/22 Mag cylinders. It will be around when he is gone. And is an absolute classic.

Also make sure he is responsible to have a firearm first. Not being a punk... Just putting it out there. Many folks these days have no business owning a firearm.

I do love my Single Six, but it's not the ammo waster that is so popular nowadays. Mine has a 9.5" (maybe 9.75"?)barrel, so I'm not going to sneak around with it. A .22 is hands down the most useful firearm in the country. It will handle raccoons, skunks, possums, rats, and any other vermin you want to get rid of. You can even load them with snake shot. The only drawback to a revolver is that the cylinder gap makes them a bit louder than a rattle can.

My go-to large caliber, if I really want to hit what I'm shooting at, is a S&W 686 with a 6" barrel. I practice with .38 special, but can load .357 if I need to take big game.

I carry either one in a sidearm holster, and nobody has ever hassled me about it. I also have a Taurus .22 9-shooter that is a piece of junk by comparison.

I have a S&W MP9, which is great for throwing 17 rounds in the general direction of a target, but is no kind of shooter.

I have a scandium S&W 642 which, loaded with .38+P, is great for discouraging muggers at 10', but is no kind of a shooter either. It's the only concealable handgun I own.

The nicest autoloader I ever shot was a Beretta M9. It wasn't fancy, but what a sweet shooter.

Thank you everyone for your advice and comments. I went to a few stores in town and really liked the Ruger SR40. Price seemed to range from just over $500 to $459 at Academy. It came with an extra clip, lock and a thing to help load the clips. It's in a nice case and we are excited to give it to him in the morning. I'm still not used to being able to buy a gun and take it home the same day!!!!

I also bought him 100 rounds of ammo, so that should get thing started. :)

Eddie

That's a nice weapon. And a pretty serious one. Maybe he could attend a firearms instruction class at the local gun shop, etc.

I recommend the BlackHawk Sherpa holster for this gun. They are very nice and have a finger lock to release pistol.

Good pick Eddie!

I have a Ruger SR9c. It's the compact version that includes a spare SR9 full size magazine with an adapter. Carries nicely with the compact mag, then switch it out to the full size for a nightstand gun. I find most plastic fantastic pistols to be a little slippery. I added a Talon Grip to mine and liked it so much that I now have one on my AR15 too. TALON Grips for Glock, XD, XDM, Kahr, Ruger and Kel-Tec Pistols. Free Shipping! I prefer the granular rubber models.

SAR B6P - Turkish made (CZ75 copy)- came with 1 - 14 round mag- cost $300 online and another $30 when it arrived at the local gun shop. Also the smaller version and very comfy, my daughter and wife will learn to shoot on this one.

One of my sons has this pistol in his arsenal. He has been been real happy with it so far. He bought it from Rural King for about same amount.
