Oliver - I put the filter between the tranny and the radiator because I didn't want the coolers to clog. The coolers were flushed twice by the shop, flushed twice by me, then I went and removed the air/oiler cooler and put a new one in. After all this work was done I installed the filter. After I put the new cooler in I cut open the old one and found it to be clean as a whistle.

Chris - I hope you are right.

Thanks,
Blane

F3506 - I don't think there is a fluid flow problem causing the ability to not lock the TC in first gear, my take is that the pump the manufacturer put in the vehicle does not flow enough ATF to allow the safe lockup of the TC in first gear so the computer doesn't let it happen. If I am wrong someone please correct my understanding.

From the link I gave earlier...
Warning: Do not use the manual lockup in 1st gear at any time. There is not enough transmission fluid pumped at the lower speeds to properly lubricate the transmission and you could damage your transmission.

That's about the extent of my understanding. Sorry I can't go into any detail.

My truck is a early 2000 model superduty w/7.3 diesel and was not hooked up thru the radiator, I plumbed it thru the radiator and installed a 31 row 6.0 cooler and my temps are in the 160-175 range when towing in 90 plus temps, it came way down from previous temps, the magnafine filter I bought from napa came apart at the seam and from what I understand there has been a problem with them. If you go to their website they say that there are bootlegs on the market and that if it don't have Magnafine stamped on the filter that it is a fake. Just thought I would share my experience.

Thanks for the heads up on the bootlegs. I'll take a look at mine and see if "Magnafine" is molded into the casing.

How much weight are you pulling when you have temps in the 160-175 range in the 90 degree outside air temps?

I pull 10,000-13,000 almost every day, I probably drive 150 miles each round trip with speeds up to 70 mph at times. In the cool weather it stays below 150, usually about 70 - 80 over ambient temp. would be a good estimate.

Good to know. I hope I get the same results after my cooler change.

Thanks,

I have an aftermarket VDO transmission temperature gauge stuck into the test port. I read 240 yesterday for the last 1/2 mile on the hill to my house. In case anybody is wondering I am pulling a 14k flatbed loaded with 13,900 pounds on the trailer axles as measured on the highway scales.

Id use 4 low, lock up the TC in either 2 or 3 depending on RPM. A fan and or additional cooler is not the option i would look at. I would look at an option that doesnt have you dumping huge amounts of power into heating up the trans fluid (shear force on the fluid from the TC). Once you lock up the TC you should have no problems with heat generation. (assuming the lockup clutch will hold)

Using 4 low is an interesting suggestion. Does anybody else reading this thread do this with their truck? What are the pitfalls, if any, of doing this? Does anybody know of a chart that shows what kinds of speeds are attainable in 4 low with a truck that has 4.10 axle ratios?

When you say lock up the TC are you suggesting installing one of those high performance devices that can control the computer? Or are you suggesting that the TC will lock up naturally in 2nd or 3rd depending on the speed I can achieve coming up the hill in 4 low?

You'e right. Once my TC locks up I have zero heat problems. On the highway I can cruise all day and even take some decent hills and still keep the fluid about 195 at the hottest.

Thanks for the suggestions.

240 is a pretty good temp actually, that will boil any water from condensation out of it. 10 MPH is a gearing and power problem, not a tranny problem unless it is slipping...... if it is slipping, you need a rebuild or better truck.

The transmission was just rebuilt professionally. I told them where my house is located and of the loads I pull up to it. I don't think the clutches are slipping. They installed heavy duty clutches and a low stall heavy duty "RV" torque converter. I can probably go faster than 10 mph but I was holding the rpms at 2000. If I speed up the engine a bit more I of course will be able to go a bit faster.

I am running Amsoil ATF. I called the Amsoil tech line and they said that the fluid does't get affected until the 275 range is reached.

Maybe I am worried over nothing. Regardless, the new cooler from a 6.0 PSD gets installed today.

Thanks,
Blane
