Red Wing Boots

I will happily spend 2 to 3 hundred dollars on good quality, American made boots. I don't understand our, ( America's ) fascination with cheap Wally World crap.

I agree 100%. I was just describing this to others in another post.

In my experience the hierarchy goes like this: Cheapest, Redwing. Then Danner, then Wesco's then White's. I have worn them all. Redwings lasted one summer scaling logs, then the next year I was working in the woods they had stretched so much they would roll out from under me when on a sideslope. Went to Whites which lasted the next 20+ years until my feet had changed and they no longer fit--feet tend to get longer as you age. Wore those boots 2-5 days a week in the woods. Got Wesco's (West Coast out of Scappoose, OR) caulked boots (the ones with the nails in them for walking on logs) and they were OK, just not as comfortable as the Whites. Danners were used when I was in the Air Guard and gov't issue boots didn't fit my narrow feet. They are OK, but I don't know how well they would hold up in the woods. A guy who worked for me only got one summer out of his Danners however, but I may be easier on gear than he was.

Hmmm. Feet get longer as you age - interesting. And all this time my bud kept telling me because I'm Norwegian - it was a case of Norwegian fat foot. His butt is getting bigger as he ages - wonder what we can call that- German loofta??

I read all these posts and it just hit me - I don't own a single pair of dress shoes. Redwings, Russels, New Balance, Nicks - but no dress shoes. I'll just have to shine up my pair of Nicks.

I had never heard of Wescos. Very interesting and impressive website.

My inexpensive pair from fleet farm (field n' forest brand) says made in USA.

I just bought a pair of hand made custom boots from Clemons Boot Company in Roseburg, Oregon. That's the heart of timber country.

Superpages.com: Sorry

It's an established, 2nd generation business of craftsmen who do great work. The price is more than you would pay off the shelf, but the quality is better, the boots actually fit your feet, and you get the features in the boot you want, from steel calks to fine leather tooling. They can do mail order, orthopedics, or whatever you need. If you spend a lot of time in boots, give them a call.

Most people can't afford more than 70-80 dollars for boots with the lousy jobs. Wally's sells them the crap they can afford. These same folks head for the dollar stores, and their wives and kids shop at goodwill as well.

Lousy pay jobs and purchasing crap go together.

I gave up on boots except for the rubber bottom, leather upper for wet and snow conditions (Cabellas- 1993 or so). Boots are always too hot for my feet, even with Dr. Scholls. I order everything for my feet online because I can get the 3E and 5E widths that I need. Can't find it locally. We used to have a nice Dexter outlet, but they are long gone, out of business.
I bought some custom moccasins last winter - made locally, after ordering a pair of wide Minnetonka moccasins. They were nice- just too narrow and made in Haiti or some place like that.

Local ones I finally ordered came from site below, in buffalo hide. triple sole and soft.
