What do you pay for diesel?

You have to pay sales tax on off road diesel?
Yessir. Not "road" tax, but sales tax. And, like I said, sales tax is "per cent" not per gallon.

Last time I looked there was a similar difference in price here. Combine the price increase and longer drive to get the off road, I just use on road now. Plus my toys seem to run better fed on road fuel vs the off road I was getting.
There shouldn't be any difference in quality of off-road and on-road diesel. The only difference that I can think of, is maybe the station where you buy it might be by-passing the filter on the off-road pump.
I have my fuel delivered in bulk and I have good filters/water separators on both of my pumps. The filter units have a glass bowl on bottom, so I instantly know if there is any water present.

I pay 3.549 a gallon here in Tulsa, Oklahoma and it stays fairly consistent.

Here in northern Australia, we pay $1.72 per litre for diesel. If my math is correct that equates to US $6.03 per gal. Now that isn't too bad for my tractor but when I fill the tank on my 4WD ute, the bill at the gas station comes to approximately US$347

In Texas, off road diesel is free of any taxes. Think that is about 38 cents /gallon difference. I can remember, in the pre ULSD days, paying less than $1 / gallon for off road diesel in early to mid 1990's.

Just 2 or 3 years ago (?) diesel was cheaper than regular gas, and had been for years. What happened?

Think it's been way more that 2-3 years? When ULSD was mandated, the USA was an an almost singular source for it so, exports increased significantly driving price above gasoline.

side track but:

I agree. I did not expect any difference. And mine was likely an isolated incident, not typical. But the difference in engine performance was immediately noticeable. I had been using off road from the time the tractor was new. Fuel always came from a bulk oil supplier in a nearby town. I don't know the reason for the difference. But I do make it a point to buy my diesel only from busy stations and use an additive now, so no worries.

Hard to believe the US was the main source for ULSD because Europe has had tighter controls (10 ppm vs 15 ppm US) and some countries give tax incentives to have less sulfur than that. Germany for example has been 2 - 3 ppm tested at the pump for many years. Sweden had LSD (50 ppm) as far back as 1990.
