2015 F150 Tow Test vs. Dodge and Chevy

/ 2015 F150 Tow Test vs. Dodge and Chevy #141
i drive a ford 2013 f150 v6 that is a company truck, no matter what i do it gets 13.1 mpg. I own a 2007 gmc v-max 6.0 4x4 crew cab, i have 33" tires, 4 inch lift, cold air intake, and flowmaster exhaust 15 mpg unloaded, 12 with a trailer.
my coworker just recived his new full size ford van with a v6, acording to him this tiny engine is gutless and wound up tight on the turnpike running 80mph.

nice commercial ford, i guess a un-informed newbi would jump all over that "real world tow test" lol

Something isn't adding up. Both V6 options in 2013 will do much better than 13.1.
Either something is wrong with that truck, you are hauling a lot of weight, or you idle a lot. Can't think of any other reasons unless it is always driven uphill.

jeje same weight i hauled with last work truck before this, it was a chev with the small v8 that one made 16-18 mpg. its not just me everyone i talked to in our company gets about the same mpg's. yes they are loaded, its a work truck i really dont care i dont pay for the fuel and i did not make the decision to switch to ford. im sure like everything else it had everything to do with $$$$ and someone taking what is posted on a window sticker is true.

we just new he was going to get a transit but its not, i dont know how he got the e series but is is definatly a e. possible the fleet company had a storage of them or like most models what is for sale here is not what is for sale in the rest of the world. most of the time we get new units with in 2 months, this one took 6 months to get. we drive anywhere from 2-4k miles a month, think we drive more than work.

I hear things like "mine gets this MPG, mine gets that MPG" there is more to MPG then just engine size and number of cylinders. Gee what could it be, you guys are so smart. You can get different MPGs from the same truck/car by just changing tires, granted maybe not a lot, you can get different MPG with just by changing tire size or changing air pressure. The guy who said he drives a truck that gets 13 makes this judgement call but makes no mention about gear ratio, tire type, driver habits (who worries about MPG with a work truck that someone else pay the fuel bills) how much weight is in the truck, type of truck (van/pu/panel/cube,etc). Lets hear all the factors that leads to MPG or you are just talking out your butt.

I don't doubt a V6 for is getting low MPG. We have 3 2014 4x4 with the 5.0 and they are showing some where around 12 mpg. Some of them have around a 1000lbs in them and at time its a lot of in town driving. They do better on the highway but I doubt we will ever see 20 mpg. Put a load in with a V6 and throw a lot of in town driving, I can see only getting 13 mpg.

Yep I agree with this. That is why I mentioned hauling around a lot of weight as a legitimate reason for low mileage. What I find hard to believe is the magical chevy with the small v8 getting 18 mpg doing the same task. My dad had a neighbor who liked to falsely brag about MPG. Dad would mess with his numbers by siphoning gas from his tank late at night for a month and then the next month add gas back to his tank. They were friends but friends will still lie to each other about mileage.

You guys must be letting your trucks idle a lot for the mileage to be so low. I have hauled over 1200lbs in the bed on my truck and it did not seem to hurt the mileage.

--cant idle for more that 7 minutes or we get a nasty gram text message from our gps monitors
-- drive em like thier butt's on fire cause we are measured on a monthly review for response time to open service orders
-- gear ratio duno didnt get a window sticker to look at and never do, trucks are shipped in from the fleet company
-- fuel ive tried 100% gas all they way to corn mix
-- something wrong with em? non ses light and if there was an issue causing excessive fuel consuption that would be an emmision related item which would give you a ses light "service engine soon"
-- "magical chevy " no just a v8, you guys jumped on the ford vs chevy idea way to soon, my point is a v8 has more dispacement, equip a v6 and a v8 identical, send em down the highway for 100 miles at 80 mph and see which one gets better mpg's, the v8 is turning lower rpm's and doing the same work. the v8 will get better mpg's and perform better in a pinch when needed.
-- as for talking out of a perticular orfice i spent 15 years under the hood's of all kinds of gm products from geo's to 7500 series kodiac dump trucks, i know just a little bit about what im talking about. i am not bashing any brands im just posting my experience in 2 trucks doing the same work over 70k miles on each one is a v6 and the other is a v8

No not a lot of idling. It's just a lot different using a truck for work vs regular use. A lot more stop and go driving.

If that is true, then you should know that

the v8 is turning lower rpm's and doing the same work.

Is not true if the vehicles are equipped with the same tranny and gear ratio.

Is not true if the vehicles are equipped with the same tranny and gear ratio.

It is true because the V6 will be using a lower gear than the V8 while towing, hauling, passing, driving up slight grade or into a headwind.
When you step on the gas to pass with a 3.7L, it will drop into 2nd gear bringing the RPM up to 6000.
