Along the same lines; the current Chrysler "Hemi" engine technology is not really much different than the technology of current Ford & GM gasoline engines. It's just that Chrysler tradmarked the term "Hemi" so they are the only ones that can use the term.

The old GM "Northstar" engine was a "hemi," fo example. And there are others.

Not really...

"Hemi" refers to the semi-spherical (hemisphere) head design, like the 426 back in the 60's. Actually, from what I hear, the new one's are truly a "hemi." But I've never had one apart to verify.

The newer hemi is not a "true" hemi. It has a little flat spots in the head where the spark plugs sit. In reality it is a true hemi design and I've seen them with my own eyes. If you cut the top 1/3 of a tennis ball off and look at the inside that is what a hemi head looks like. The true advantage of the hemi is the valve arrangement. The valves sit across from each other which allows for a larger set of valves compared to a wedge head design where the valves are side by side. It also promotes better flow of intake and exhaust.

It also allows higher compression on lower quality gasoline.

That is good to know.

Re-reading my post I realize I made a mistake... I meant to say that I had heard the new ones are NOT true hemis. If that is false, even better.

Hemi engines are nothing special like back in the days. I've had a Honda with Hemi engines, Fords, ect. Even my Kawasaki engine on my Ferris ZTR is a Hemi design.

I beg to differ. I've had my Challenger on the dyno, its the 5.7, and I have a few simple bolt ons, exhaust, tuner, cold air intake, and pulled 370 hp at the rear wheels. That's either more or equal to the original 426 hemi. The newer hemis also take well to mods to get even more horsepower. If you get into either the 6.1 or 6.4 hemi, the ones in the SRT8's, they make even more power, and if that's not enough look at the Hellcat, it makes 707 hp. They have had the Hellcat on the dyno and its UNDERATED at 707 hp. They are all pretty special if you ask me. They are just a lot more common then the original 426 hemi, 392 hemi etc.

I have always been a Mopar guy, partly because everyone and thier brother and 4th cousin has a Chavy or Ford; dare to be different.....

The 426 Hemi was a dominate motor; NASCAR and the drag race sanctioning bodies restricted the motor heavily so Ford and GM could compete.

In addition to the current Hemi being one amoung many(Chrysler has the naming rights, but there really are numerous hemi head designs by numerous manufacturers), the current Hemi is just a production motor. Ther earlier generations of Hemi's were a special motor. If you had one, 392, but especially 426, you had a limited production special edition. The newer one has watered down that special edition.

Ya, they make a couple versions now, a new 392 etc. But it is still just a production motor.

They, IMHO, watered down the namesake.
