Thanks green power and diamondpilot, The reason I ask is I have a friend that bought a new 06 superduty 4x who was driving out his driveway one day and he heard this loud bang, Gets out to investigate and there's transmission fluid all over the driveway. He eventually gets the trans pan off and finds a fist sized hole on top of the trans. This may be a one time situation but his warranty had just ended so he's up a creek without a paddle so to speak.

Overall, the TorqueShift has been a very reliable and robust transmission. It's had a few scattered problems just like everyone else, but all-in-all, it's been a great tranny.

If his warranty had literally 'just ended', have him contact Ford. I've had them honor the warranty 4k after it was up on a previous truck. It may not be the full amount, but they may split it or something along those lines. It doesn't hurt to ask.

I have personally owned 2 F250s with this tranny and know of several folks who own Fords equipped with this trans- no issues to report. Ford seems to make a reliable auto trans, I am probably jinxing myself here but the auto in my 97 F150 is still going strong over 200k miles.

I have one ('08), my father had 2 (one in an '03, one in an '11), my brother has one ('03), all of them behind diesels, and countless other folks around driving SD's have them. I don't know of anyone in person that has had an issue with the tranny.

The tranny in my '99 F150 puked coolant all over the repair shop's parking lot at 134k. It didn't take them long to find the cause of slipping/shaking feeling I was experiencing! :)

I had some issues with my 2011, more of a drivability problem than anything else. There were 2 instances where the transmission would act like you had pressed in the clutch. This happened to me during the shift from 1 to 2. Engine would race and no power would go to the wheels. I would back off of the accelerator pedal and let the engine return to idle and the problem would go away. I think it was a programming glitch in the TCM. I have a friend at work who has the same truck and he also had the same thing happen to him. Not a mechanical problem with the transmission per se but if it happened to you at the wrong time you could have a bad day if you were trying to merge or make a left turn.

I'm glad to see all the manufacturers seem to be going to the standard rating. It also looks like ford was doing a good job on the 450's ratings already since gvw went up slightly and payload dropped slightly, but essentially it has the same rating.

The transmission has been a very stout piece since 2003.5. It got another gear around 2011.

Chris
your opinion may vary with our experiences. of the 13 trucks in our fleet from 11-14 models. all but 2 have had the transmissions unstacked. Several within the first 30-40k miles.
Clutch pack failures. All have had multiple sets of solenoids and a few have had valve body replacements.

Just found this article about the SAE ratings for the F-450 pickup. 2015 Ford F-450 Joins J2807 Party
I was wondering how long that would take. There was really no option other than to accept the SAE rating after being called out in public by another manufacturer. I guess now RAM will have to build a 4500 pickup to compete with the F450? When will it end???

We had this issue from day one. Dealerships would always say they either couldnt duplicate the issue on test drive or that they loaded some different software and hope for the best.
Bypassed the dealership and spent some time on the phone with a Ford engineer and finally came up with a fix. Replaced solenoids and some components in valve body in transmission. It will fix it for about 50K miles and start doing it again. We just have the parts replaced when it starts doing it.

I have hauled some calves to the sale and last weekend I pulled one of my antique trucks to a tractor show. No problems hauling these loads. The truck continues to impress me with how quiet and solid it is, much more so than any of my previous trucks.

My torque shift has impressed me its all stock hooked to a built power stroke making 915ftlbs at the wheels. I detune to 700 at the wheels while towing but I put 16k behind her and it shifts smooth. I did have custom trans tune done from innovative diesel when engine was tuned.

No problems so far. I've enjoyed this truck more than any I've ever had. Very solid and quiet, doesn't lack for power.

Did they stay with the std. 56" CA of a "pickup", or is it a 60" with a longer bed?

It's the same size as a standard pickup.
