Stray dogs are becoming a pain

Of course it is down South problem. Dumping a dog is a white trash habit, and shooting a stray dog is in my opinion a white trash solution. Having said that South Carolina was my home till two years ago, so yes I know what I am talking about.

A stray dog that is just moving through, maybe even roaming is one thing. A stray that comes back again and again to chase, injure or kill livestock is another. If you can catch it, there are many people who take them in, depending on where you live. But if you can't, why should we lose livestock? It is not like we are talking about living in the city and a dog wanders into the back yard and is gone a little later. These rogue dogs or dog packs aren't even out to feed themselves. They just kill.

I attempted to break up a dog fight once with a water hose and the dogs just fought harder when I sprayed them. Last time I'll ever do that. I saw two rouge dogs outside of one of my dogs pens the other day (huge pen that I use when I can't have my dogs in the yard) and they were literally biting at my dog and trying to get over the fence to him. You can tell aggressive behavior from non aggressive behavior and these dogs were determined to kill my lab. I changed their mind real quick with my .22. The dog I took to the spca was actually a friendly dog, got along fine with my dogs, but I have 3 and don't want or need 4.

Folks around here seem to feel it's OK just to let Ole' Rover run loose since he is always home when they get in from work. After dinner time and all day while owners at work, they tend to run in packs like a bunch of hoodlum teenagers hunting trouble till dinner time. When I had cattle, it was a constant battle to keep them off calves.

I've not had stray or dumped dogs here. The neighbor's little terrier wanders away once in a great while but they always go looking for it. A guy was training coyote hunting dogs last year and they passed through twice. They had GPS tracking collars on but he was always chasing them for miles. Someone turned him in eventually for not having his dogs under control and he had to stop.

Under state law each town has to either operate an animal shelter or support/belong to one. Our town pays $1,672 per year to support the no-kill county shelter. And we have a town animal control officer who earns $2,500 per year. They deal with all domestic animal issues from dogs to cows in the road. So, we spend $4,172 per year for animal issues out of a $400K town operating budget--about 1%.

It is illegal in Maine to shoot a domestic animal unless it is attacking or attempting to attack another animal or person.

I have a couple neighbors that really don't get along. Their homes are about 1/4 mile from each other out in the woods. I am on good terms with both of them and have witnessed this amusing "cold war" going on between them and it kind of centers around these dogs. The dogs belong to neighbor A and they are allowed to run loose on 140 acres. They are sweet dogs, and sometimes come down the road to visit neighbor B. Neighbor B and his wife really like the dogs, despite their bad feelings for neighbor A. So they have started feeding the dogs VERY well in an attempt to entice the dogs to stay at their place. Neighbor A had noticed his dogs had been gone more and more, so he also started feeding the dogs some very savory delicious meals. These dogs have started to noticably gain weight as they travel the 1/4 mile between their two homes.
