Stray dogs are becoming a pain

These dogs have started to noticably gain weight as they travel the 1/4 mile between their two homes.

That's pretty funny stuff!! Of course, dogs are like people - they continue the behavior that they are "rewarded" for. In this case, the behavior is coming "home" (to either home) and the reward is a full tummy each time.

KretZ - I noticed your location in SE Ohio and Germany. Interesting. You ought to start a thread with pics about your place in Germany. The Rhein valley is beautiful! When I was a kid we lived in Weisbaden for four years. Made many trips on and along the Rhein.

I've been using a VERY old and VERY weak BB gun. I'm talking it's so weak you can watch the bb come out the end of the barrel and see where it goes. Now the dogs that were trying to attack my dog got to meet my .22

Decades ago I was talking to an old chicken farmer. He was born in the house/Large Shack he had for sale along with some land. He was in his 80's and had lived on the place for sale and his own place his entire life. Unfortunately he smelled like really bad smelling chicken scat. One of the things he said to me was that every year or so the farmers in the area would have to reduce the stray dog population. There would be too many stray dogs running around killing livestock and carrying rabies so the farmers would reduce the population. I would assume most of the strays were people from the towns and cities dumping the dogs.

A year or so ago, I gut I know was driving in the NC mountains and saw a person in the back of a pickup just start throwing GSD puppies out of the back of the truck.:mad::mad: WTF. He stopped and managed to save one of them but the rest were injured and died. Not only was the act cruel and sick the dumb a....ss could have made a bunch of money of the puppies. :confused3:

Later,
Dan

For years & years we would always have stray dogs in the spring. Then I found out why - we live near a college town, the kids bring a puppy to school during fall quarter and by spring quarter the dog is too big to handle. They would take them out and turn them loose. Over the 32 years here I've taken in four stray dogs. About five years ago the college quit allowing animals in their facilities and now our stray dog situations is not a problem. I took in and kept some very fine animals during the earlier years.

Of course it is down South problem. Dumping a dog is a white trash habit, and shooting a stray dog is in my opinion a white trash solution. Having said that South Carolina was my home till two years ago, so yes I know what I am talking about.

Mild weather in the south means strays survive outside longer and have longer breeding seasons. There's a reason Florida has a lot more stray cats than New England, and it isn't because New Englanders are classier.

Scare them away if no harm done; if friendly, catch and call if collar with info; if dangerous to my livestock/children, they get the SSS treatment.
Shoot 'em, Shovel 'em and Shut up. Easier method is SBS using a Backhoe :)

I should rephrase my comment. Indiscriminate shooting of strays is wrong, protecting one's own pets or livestock is understandable. I wouldn't hesitate to protect my pets from strays. Unfortunately we live in a throw a way society, and unwanted pets or animals pay the price. I personally think we should reverse the situation, and shoot the sub humans who dump the animals.

It would eliminate the problem on your farm but you would not know it from your jail cell. It is kinda backwards, isn't it?

We live at the start of a logging road, and have many pets dumped "up the road" to get them gone. When they become pests, the 22 ends it. And I love dogs and cats.
