Wearing a sleep apnea mask?

Apparently the airport security in Jackson Mississippi have not heard tell of cpap . They are about ready to lock the place down after looking at the xray. They were on full alert and suspicious while plugging it into the power outlet. They were rather letdown and disappointed when it failed to produce toxic fumes, smoke , biohazard or a loud KaBoom.

That is pretty funny. I have never had any problem with TSA and CPAP, but then again I have never flown into or out of Jackson MS either.

Went visit my doctor for my regular checkup last week, and he suggested I have sleep apnea and ordered a sleep study. Well, they called me yesterday (Sept 30) and said they can schedule a consultation as early as November 17. And that's not the study, that's just the consultation!!!!.

I'm not sure I have apnea, but I do snore a fair amount. (At least that's what my wife says). I think I sleep well most nights, except when she keeps slugging me to tell me to stop snoring. I've always been a morning person, and I am most alert early in the morning. I don't remember being sleepy while driving. I do get sluggish after lunch most days.

I'm ready to have the test done and see the results. After reading most of this thread, it seems that almost everyone who needs the CPAP is very happy and relieved when they start using it.

If this happened since the last UN summit in NY, this doesn't surprise me, if you heard on the news, Iran's PM said there was a threat to airlines, that terrorists were hiding explosives in electronic devices. TSA then required all devices out off their cases and powered up to prove that they were truly an operational device and not a bomb. That's my recollection of the alert until homeland security stood down.

Apnea is NOT just snoring............NOT..........Instead, it's taking in a breath, when you are asleep, snore or not, and it seems to whoever is listening to you, that you have stopped breathing............and then............YOU take a huge breath in to catch up............That is also when you wake up and don't even realize the breathing or waking up. This happens over again and again and again all night long. Loss of sleep is obvious but what all that does to your body is even worse.........God bless.........Dennis

CompleteLawnCare, Dennis Arrow is absolutely correct. If you have apnoea then it is dangerous. However, some people just snore a lot and often very loudly without having apnoea. A CPAP machine keeps everybody happy in either case - and an apnoea sufferer alive.

I understand. That's why I'm looking forward to the sleep study. I got a call today and someone canceled so my consultation has been moved from November 17 to this Monday (Oct. 6).

I just finished filling out the questionaire for the consultation, and my answer to most of the questions was 'never'. I sleep well at night, and the only time I wake up is when I have to go pee, which is usually 2-3 times a night. I wake up feeling refreshed, and I don't fall asleep while driving or during the day.

However, I'm going into this open minded and ready to see the results of the study. If a CPAP will help me to stop snoring, and allow my wife to sleep better, it will be worth it to me.

If you don't have either central or obstructive sleep apnea, rejoice, and all is not lost on the snoring front. Perhaps one of the jaw re-aligning devices you put in your mouth would help you. And if you find out you do have it, well then you can be a Borg like the rest of us and join the "collective".. resistance is futile!

When I got my CPAP, the Dr gave me a letter to use for security at the airport - this was around 1 year after 9/11. The first time, I had to show the letter. When I flew a few years later, they did not even question about the machine.

What does your sleep partner (if'n you have one) say?

I was just like you, except that my wife said that it sounded like I sometimes stopped breathing, and very occasionally as I was drifting off, I'd wake myself up exhaling after a breath hold.

Apparently I stop breathing and actually hold my breath in my sleep around 50 times an hour, and although each episode lasts less than 20-30 seconds and my oxygen saturation only drops to the upper 80's or lower 90's, but because of the frequency and fact that the episodes are so prevalent, my apnea is rated as moderate to severe.

When I first started using my c-pap, I have to say that I had actually felt better before using, but now after several months using it and having switched to the nasal pillow mask I really think that I am seeing some benefits now.

Most importantly, I have significantly reduced my risk of a bunch of negative effects including high BP, diabetes, coronary artery disease, and at least according to a recent study, I may be becoming more attractive.

CPAP Treatment For Sleep Apnea Could Make You Look Younger, More Attractive

CPAP therapy provides beauty sleep for people with sleep apnea - American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM)

If your c-pap doesn't have a humidifier, a tubing heater (to reduce condensation in the tubing), and an ability to provide a lower level of positive pressure to allow easier exhalation, you should look into replacing it if possible, because these are the features that do the most to make using c-pap comfortable, which makes you more likely to use it.

CLC, I hope that you are right and don't have apnea, but I was pretty certain that I didn't either, and all my answers were just like yours...

Best of luck,
Thomas

If a CPAP will help me to stop snoring, and allow my wife to sleep better, it will be worth it to me.

I have a son-in-law who has had a CPAP device for several years but used it infrequently until about the time I got mine, and he started using it more because his snoring was keeping everyone else in the house awake. Our daughter spent a few nights in the hospital this year and he stayed in the room with her one night and a nurse came to wake him up because his snoring was disturbing other patients up and down the hall.
