Husky, Stihl Redmax, Echo,Schindawa, Tanaka, etc..
They all benefit from each other. If it wasn't for the competition, the quality would suffer.

Coyote Machine,
I've seen those kit type arrangement but thought there were a bit too light duty, so you think that they are worth a look at? I'd only be buying it for the pole saw qualities. I do have some heavy duty work for it though and need to go upto 5 mtrs.

I'd look online at the specs of any of the pole pruners you're considering. I bought the original Echo split shaft unit a long time ago. They've made improvements, and upped the ccs to make some models more robust, I suspect. I've never been let down by either of the head units and i'm not easy on my saws/pruners. I'd buy from an Echo dealer rather than a box store for help with choosing which model is best suited to your needs.
The heavier duty the more weight, and fatigue is a factor if running a pole pruner for extended amounts of time, IMPO.
If you can stagger your heavy duty use with other tasks or over a longer time frame it might work better for you.
Try renting one in the size you think you need, if available in your realm.
Dare I say, 'pro level' Stihls may be most applicable to your needs, but they come at a high price and are going to be taxing on the operator over long periods of continuous use.
What are you wanting to cut at 5 meters? How often will it need cutting?

You need to meet ZERO Federal Aviation Administration requirements to pilot a single seat ultralight aircraft. No instruction, no certification, no age limit. So, technically speaking, we are all qualified to be pilots based on that. ;) Sorry but no good analogy goes unpunished.

As for operating dangerous equipment, its too broad of a term to make a statement that:
"Top handle saws do not belong in the hands of homeowners because of the inherent risks associated with these saws."

While its very true that there are plenty of people that can't operate a toothbrush whithout hurting themselves, its also true that there are plenty of people that are completely competant operating dangerous equipment. And then there's the rest of us that fall in the middle. Perhaps something like:

"Top handle saws are very dangerous and do not belong in the hands of people not familiar with their operation because of the inherent risks associated with these saws." would have been more appropriate. ;)

As for pro-grade, all that means is its built tougher to take the abuse of commercial work vs. the lighter duties of non-commercial work. Pro-grade has nothing to do with the skill level required to operate it. Those skills can only come with hands-on use of the equipment. Some folks will buy smaller tools, learn to use them, and as they gain experience, will upgrade to more capable tools. On the other hand, some folks just go out and buy the biggest, baddest tool right off the bat, then cut their fingers off or worse.

I can appreciate your concern for unskilled or untrained people. I appreciate it when folks tell me I'm doing something wrong or dangerous and why. Its mutual learning.

I bought an old farm that has been let go so I have a lot of fence lines to trim, up and down the driveway and also an old orchard that needs to be cleaned up and pruned everything has been let go. I have hired the Stihl's before but they don't hire any other brands. I believe that Stihl brought out a back harness to help with extended use so I thought that would be the way to go but $$$$ are the consideration. About six years ago I bought the Kawasaki brush cutter which has been excellent so I'm open to the best product in my price range.

Top handle chainsaws are intended for use by those who work in trees and have training in the use of these saws while performing various types of tree surgery as part of their work related duties. Top handle saws are not meant to be used on the ground. Other types of chainsaws are designed for ground level work.

If one is a paying passenger on a commercial flight on an airplane, that does not make them a pilot by osmosis.

Questions?

however I need a pole saw now. The lowest of the Stihl's are over $1300 here so I've been looking on ebay for a second hand one.

$1300!!! That's twice what the most expensive is here. I think the lowest cost one is around $350. If you know anyone in the states, it would be worth having them ship it over.

An addendum to my initial post -

Professionals and those with more experience - If you can't offer advice and share your experience without being sarcastic and condescending, your advice will fall on deaf ears, as it should. So, keep it to yourself.
