How do I know what kind of welding rods to buy??

Like mentioned, 7014 is a good rod for general use - it also re-strikes very easy and runs well on AC as well. Run it hot, drag the flux on the plate, and take a nap - yeah, it's that easy sometimes :)

I stopped using 7014 for this very reason. Figured naps while welding wasn't a very good mix......

 Yeah, what's the incentive in enjoying welding, if it's just going to weld itself? :)

Heck, the older I get, the more a good nap now-and-then is a very nice thing :D

That's why I buy really old welders, they already know where to put the weld...
...then I chuck up a 7014, which already know how to weld itself...
...then I take a little cat-nap

I use 1/8 inch 6011 for the dirty work, and 3/32 and 1/8 7018 for verts and overhead. Also like 1/8 7024 for pretty flat welds.
