Removing Small Trees?

   / Removing Small Trees? #21
it is by no means quick. but have simply wrapped a chain about 4 times around the smaller stuff, and then hook chain back onto itself. primary goal as i lift up with FEL or pull it with tractor, the chain tightens up and has enough grip to keep a hold of things. chain does slip every now and then, and a pain to wrap chain around, and more so un-wrap chain off a tree that you have pulled out and gets caught up in things.

a old metal spare tire rim, or A frame has also been used. goal of either one, is to wrap chain or brush grubber or like right at ground level. and then lay chain over top of the spare tire rim (right up near tree), and then on back of tractor swinging draw bar or truck hitch. what it essentially does, is allow the chain to cause a pulling up force. vs a pulling over force.

one of these or a chain style brush grubber can be easier to use than just a plain chain. but again you want "pulling up force" not sideways force. hence a spare tire rim or an A frame.

A frame = 4x4's with a extra heavy duty latch (for like a gate or like) at the top, and then a piece of lumber between the 4x4's to hold it all together and keep the legs from spreading apart.
if you have some metal that might be better for the legs, so the ends that touch the ground, will want to sink into the ground some vs sliding across the ground, if you did not setup the A frame correctly.

==============
for larger trees, were the trunk is actually solid vs a hard rubber hose for small saplings. leave i don't know, say 6' feet or so above ground of the trunk. and then use FEL to push right at the top of the stump that is left. (turns the trunk into a lever) to help pull / push the root ball up and out of the ground.

I have the BG20, it weighs 35 pounds. Works good on roots and short stumps that would be hard to wrap a chain around.

Something like this should work for just about anything you have.

Yep, the Brush Grubber is too heavy for me to use for very long, so I got the Long Arm Tree Puller.

Pulled a cedar tree took picture, then shook the dirt from the roots.

When I'm clearing a trail I walk through the path of least resistance with my stihl fs 90 and take everything about an inch. I will then go through with my chainsaw cut any trees laying across the trail in 4 foot lengths and take down any trees above am inch. I will then get on my tractor and bulldoze all of that stuff as far as I can and off the trail. it would surprise you how much one guy can clear in a day

I have a Stihl FS 130 with a saw blade and cut up to two inch scrub then chairsaw larger stuff. I ordered a woodmaxx chipper today and plan to make wood chip paths thru my wooded areas. Stumps are removed with my tree spade. I can do a lot of damage in no time at all. 😬

I've used my loader with a tooth bar. Push them over with the loader up high. This usually pops the near-side roots. Then put the teeth under it and drive forward to get the rest of it out. Works great on anything under 3" or so. Same thing has been suggested with other loader attachments. Pretty much the same technique. The grubbers are good because they leave most of the dirt in place.

I need to remove a number of small seedling trees, mainly pine and sweetgum to clear trails. etc. I recently got a stumpbucket although I really haven't broken the code on using it yet. I've also seen videos and advertisements for something called a tree/post puller that looks impressive but is expen$ive. So, what is the collective experience/recommendations of the TBN group on removing small trees? Thanks.

I use the simple chain wrap method, don't normally pull to many trees/shrubs but did yesterday took six out that were just in the wrong spot.
