Let's talk garage/workshops

I moving and need a building or buildings that solve two problems.

1) I'm an avid woodworker.
2) I need to house a tractor, ZTR, and maybe a golf cart.

I think a two car garage sized building would handle #2 but I'll probably do somebody bigger, like 30x48 for the workshop.

I have the land for both but would it be better to combine them into a large building or to have two buildings? Pros and cons?

I would tend to have one large building in addition to the house rather than multiple out buildings. With the exception if you have feed, hay etc. That should be separate due to rodent attraction.

Always build bigger than you need. For one it's cheaper today then it will be years from now. I built a 100' x 125' and it cost me 45K in the 90's. Today just to put a 30' x 125' wing on it will cost more than the 45K. I could have put the wing on for 15K back then. Also when I went in for the first day I swore I would never ever fill that thing up. Today, I can't move in it for so much stuff.

Building one larger building and designing it for future expansion would be my choice. By making the main structure walls 2' taller gives you a choice of adding a shed roof in the future at a lesser cost.

I vote for one multi-purpose building. Everything you need will be under one roof. One air compressor with piping can feed all your uses, electric service and HVAC is a similar savings, the tool or thing you need won't be always in the "other building."

I'd allow space for your tractor implement and outdoor equipment collection to grow some.

One big building is my vote. I'd dress it up a bit, I'd use my shop a lot more if it was heated.

I'd rather have 2 buildings or at least a divided building. As you know woodworking no matter what you do, there will be dust and shavings everywhere. I have an imaginary wall that separates my wood tools from welding and mechanic tools. I have to be vigilant about the dust. I wouldn't want the dust all over my tractors or motorcycles.

When we lived out in the country, I had a 40' x 60' shop in which I kept my tractor and implements as well as my tools. Now in town, we have the usual attached 2 car garage in which we keep both vehicles, then I have a 21' x 25' shop under the same roof as the house, but separated by a breezeway/patio. And I have an 8' x 12' metal storage building for all the lawn care tools. It works well for me.

I agree, one building and maybe divided. I built a 28'x30' building about 15 years ago. Its barely big enough and I have another 1 car garage for tractor storage and an attached two car garage on the house. Bigger is better up to a certain point but after that you might just have wasted space. My only regret is not going with 12' high ceilings. I work on vehicles quit a bit and wish I had tall enough walls for a hoist.
