What size wire is that? I just can't believe you're having this kind of trouble!

That was .024 Hobart HB-28 and c-25 gas.

I can't believe it either. Not a big deal as I had a backup to get me though.

Remember this is the root pass of the V-butt test plate?

Did you try .030 wire. Remember I used .025 wire for that endurance test. I thought the machine did a lot better with .030 wire. With .025 wire I thought it was harder to find the sweet spot.

I also tried .035 and .030 solid wire. I thought it did the best with .035 wire but Mark suggested .030 so I went an bought a 10 pound spool. The 3 pass fillet I posted on WW was with .035 wire, but had quite a bit of splatter. Then switched to .030 wire, that was when it started acting even worse with not striking an arc when the wire hit the base metal. At that point I knew it was time to stop and let Mark know.

BTW, The pipe spacer you made works perfectly on 10 pound spools of wire.

Thank you!;)

Roadhunter before you throw in the towel, maybe pick up a roll of Lincoln L-56 wire. I can't say I've ever used Hobart Mig wire before. But I've had nothing but good luck with L-56.

I really believe some of the splatter can be corrected by adjusting the nozzle. Get the contact tip out flush, or just a little past the end of the nozzle. Once everything got warmed up I could get the nozzle back further, which cut down on the splatter some.

I agree. The real issue is not striking an arc when wire hits the base metal. See the pics of voltage level 4 where the wire just curled up. Then it started doing the same on Voltage level 7. That's when I decided to stop since it wasn't really even welding at that point.

That's what makes me think a wire got knocked lose during shipping from here to your place. I tried to pack it up just like it came to me.
