If I have the option I use the grapple. I only use the winch to reach logs up/down steep hills or across rough patches off terrain. I think the grapple opens up to about 30" and it's a joy to not hop on and off for the chokers.

A benefit of the winch is that it weighs about double the grapple and is nice to bring the log to the landing and load it onto the trailer. With the grapple I have to keep a good sized block to grab for counter weight - which isn't that bad.

If I only had one choice I would go with the winch.

I just sent out a couple emails on a pair of Aquiline Talons 16.9 x 30. I haven't seen any in stock online. We'll see if I hear anything back on them. They look real nice

Have you called Ken Jones in Worcester? They aren't showing your size in stock online, but I bet he could order them. It's probably a quick jaunt down Rt 146 for you.

I actually ordered a set of Talon's last winter from him, but there was an issue with the online ordering system, and I never went back to "re order", now that winter is here again, I'm kicking myself for not re ordering them.

I sent them an email yesterday, I'll probably call them tomorrow as well. Not too bad of a ride for me. Have you dealt with them aside from the order you placed online?

I haven't purchased anything from them (aside from my one attempt) but was referred to them from a neighbor of mine who has bought chains from him as well as tires and tire repair. He had very good things to say about him. I've spoken with them on the phone a few times and they were very helpful.

I'm really tempted to buy a set of those Talon's (again). Just can't seem to bite the bullet right now though.

Very nice. Does the front end get light pulling a big log up hill?

The front end will get light. Sometimes I’ll roll a log into the bucket for more weight. More often than not I have the root grapple or the loader forks on which helps a lot since they weigh about 200 lbs more than the bucket. I’ve even had to grab logs with those for additional weight in the front.

That looks like a very nice grapple unit. You are just teasing us with a couple pics, What can you tell us about operating it. I see you have a winch too. How do you divide the work between the two of them ?? Thanks

Here are a few more that I had on my phone:

Nice pictures.

X3 - Thanks for the pics of your equipment in action. Looks like you have a lot of room to work in. Is that firewood for yourself or do you have a bigger project you want to do in your woods ?
