Some time ago I posted about a problem with oil being pushed into the air filter. It got worse over time to the point that I was losing power so I decided to trailer her out to a local tractor dealer that has experience with Robin engines. It's time for valve adjustment anyways. I always get a kick out of the eventual question...what type of tractor. I usually reply it's a Power Trac and you probably never saw/worked on one. Again I was correct at this particular dealer but she was a big hit with the guys in service with the frequesnt response of "sweet" when they learned about it.

So now I await the dreaded phone call as to what the problem is and how much it will cost me.

Bummer. Hopefully it will be minor adjustments/repairs.

...and hopefully it will be back soon! Had to use a wheelbarrow to distribute a lot of 1b stone this weekend. I love that darn tractor!

I don't mind using my wheelbarrow, but it is 4WD. :D

well, not good news from the garage. They adjusted the valves and then did a leak down test and both cylinders failed. Was told possibly head gasket but since both failed he thinks it's probably much worse than that and the engine will need to be pulled. If it's valves, rings, etc he figures we'll be easily over $1k!!!! Not what I wanted to hear about an engine that has barely 750 hours on it!! I have always kept up the maintenance on this and am REALLY pissed!

So, what would be the best thing to do here...have the current engine torn down and rebuilt or look at a new engine? If new engine would a 25hp Robin be the way to go or can a Kohler be dropped in? They are going to contact Tazewell for some input but I also value the opinions here.........

Yeah, disappointing to say the least after only 750hrs. ...

If the cost of installing a new head gasket is not too high, might be worth it. If it does not fix the problem, then you have a new spare gasket... (However, I'm unsure that a new head gasket would ever solve an oil-out-the-carb issue...)

As for fix vs. replace, it'll boil down to the value of the machine for yourself or the open market, vs. how deep your pockets are... End result will still be unexpected financial strain. :(
