I appreciate your kind words, overszd! Means a lot from someone who's been there. Warm, sincere handshake returned!:drink:

Amazingly and sadly, unprovoked attacks continue, not just in NYC. Just up the road in Waco, a weatherman was ambush attacked by a complete stranger with no interactions whatsoever. Shot multiple times, recovering well.

"No Interaction": Waco Meteorologist Describes Shooting Attack | NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Such ambush attacks, exceptionally rare, including the attack at Luby's in Killeen some years ago (43 shot, 23 killed), are the reason I carry. Self protection necessity can occur anywhere during regular daily life.

Jeeze, that's pretty nuts...the shooter must have thought the guy actually controlled the weather.

Very thought provoking thread. Thanks to all who have contributed.

I read and hear on the news that the number of people owing firearms is increasing, as is the number of people that have permits to carry concealed firearms. Yet I don't hear or read of ANY accidental shootings by such people, and in today's anti-gun climate, I'd think such a story would be front page news from coast to coast. That leaves me to conclude that the vast majority of people that choose to carry a concealed firearm do so only after a fair amount of deliberation, training, and practice. All as it should be.

That same perusal of the news media shows why many people are engaging in firearms ownership: the media makes it impossible to ignore random acts of violence in which most of us can picture ourselves being entangled. In my own small community of 86,000, during the last year or so there have been several drive by shootings, running gun battles between gang members, armed robberies involving gunfire, and even a sniping type random murder, all in locations I frequent. Local law enforcement is under staffed and has suffered years of budget cuts. The woods are full of meth labs and pot grows, and these folks are known for shooting first and permanently disappearing their victims. The world is a different and much more dangerous place than Mayberry RFD, much as I wish such was not the case.

Yet even with all this, I have a hard time imagining anyone shooting someone for shouting "Freeze!". Yes, I can see a lot of people dropping to the floor or otherwise running for cover, and people with legally concealed firearms getting ready to use them. But so far, we haven't had any "heros" that saved the day with guns blazing, and from what I've seen of my fellow citizens, it'll likely stay that way. No one I've met at a range or concealed carry class sees defensive use of a firearm as anything but a last resort means of preserving their own life or someone else's in their immediate vicinity. Every one of them sees such a situation as a life changing horror story, and go out of their way to minimize their chances of having something like that happen to them. I think this mind set stems from owning and/or carrying a firearm, because doing so forces consideration of the consequences in a very personal way that is far beyond just reading about gun violence in the media. That may also be why there is so much outrageous "what if" thinking in the media: The majority are not gun owners, have never asked themselves the questions related to defensive use of firearms, and have never pictured the very real consequences of using a firearm in a defensive situation.

We had another Police shooting in our State yesterday. This time we have video of the incident and the media actually showed the part where the deceased pointed his gun at the policeman. Bout time these things are reported in this manner. But of course a crowd gathered, fires were started, looting occurred, Policemen were abused, four arrested. What are these people thinking??

..I'll grant you a "maybe"; Also maybe that someone is joking. As the testimony here confirms. Or maybe the customer and cashier are old friends, The point I'm making is you should be left with the uncomfortable impression of: "I don't know." And the first rule of gun handling/hunting is: " If you don't know what you're shooting at, then don't shoot." The mentality of shoot first, ask questions later is wrong. People projecting their scared view of the world that there's a terrorist around every corner is dangerous, they'll see what they want to see.

Sounds like someone is projecting their opinions of gun owners.

Capability for deadly force exists, intent not established, immediacy not established, no shot, no exposure of fire arm, hand in pocket ready to draw, remain mostly concealed and await further events. It will take only a second or two for things to become more clear. Call 911 and leave phone on so events are recorded and dispatcher can be informed of number of people and situation as it unfolds, maybe put phone in shirt pocket, leaving hands free for weapon if necessity arises.

Excellent advice.

I can't believe how long this went. I'm sure anything I said would be redundant. With the state of affairs in this country it's starting to make sense to carry if you can (both legally and have the training). As always the decision to use deadly force will be made quickly and only with the information in that split second. I would only use DF to protect myself and loved ones from immanent DF, whereas cops must protect the public from the potential of danger to the public. That's a big weight. A doofus who yells FREEZE! in a convenience store is going to have any cop there drawing and going to a ready position where the next action will depend on the actor. Quickly pulling out a cell phone or wallet could result in getting shot.

In any case we are mourning two cops assassinated in NYC and another shot in Florida.

"The state of affairs", leaves me with some questions.

Statistically violent crime has declined and leveled off in the past 12 years.

http://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/uc...-in-the-u.s.-2012/violent-crime/violent-crime
Overview
In 2012, an estimated 1,214,462 violent crimes occurred nationwide, an increase of 0.7 percent from the 2011 estimate.

When considering 5- and 10-year trends, the 2012 estimated violent crime total was 12.9 percent below the 2008 level and 12.2 below the 2003 level.

There were an estimated 386.9 violent crimes per 100,000 inhabitants in 2012, a rate that remained virtually unchanged when compared to the 2011 estimated rate.

Aggravated assaults accounted for 62.6 percent of violent crimes reported to law enforcement in 2012. Robbery offenses accounted for 29.2 percent of violent crime offenses; rape accounted for 6.9 percent; and murder accounted for 1.2 percent.

Information collected regarding types of weapons used in violent crime showed that firearms were used in 69.3 percent of the nation’s murders, 41.0 percent of robberies, and 21.8 percent of aggravated assaults.

In the same time period that violent crime has decreased many people express increasing concerns/fears/anxieties about their safety or the probability of becoming a victim. The feeling is real, but not consistent with measured reality--for some reason or another.

In 2007, I went from driving 200 miles five days a week to less than 6000 per year total. Statistically speaking, I'll probably be OK not wearing a seat belt, but I do.

I've never been comfortable living my life based on statistical probabilities and never will.

In 32 years of interviewing victims of crime, I don't remember any who truly expected their lives would be touched by crime in the way it was.

Another shooting by police over night.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKx-7ZxZ1es

Zoomed Video shows, clearly to me, officer responding to convenience store call, barely out of his car, talks briefly with a fellow who walks away just long enough to pull a hand gun then turn, walk back toward officer several steps then raise the weapon directly at officer. Am sure officer was amazed and surprised.

Weapon had serial number removed, fellow had criminal record. In the space of just a couple of seconds the situation went from calm to chaos. In poor lighting officer identified a hand gun pointed directly at him, threat was immediate since the person was initially walking away and could have continued, distance was certainly deadly range with high probability, there could have been no other reason to pull the weapon than intent to use and closing the distance to the officer was intent to increase probability of making a killing shot.

Sadly, justified self protection in my opinion. All caught on camera. Never be a more clear situation. Others likely will see it differently.

Agreed, such situations are rare, but media coverage increases our awareness of each one, thus they "feel" more frequent. IMHO.
