I Put A Little To Much Oil In

Outside the debate of what is too full, the best way to remove engine oil is to just loosen the oil filter a bit and let some slowly drain out. Easy to tighten back without getting oil all over the place and yourself. You don't have to completely remove it nor put on a new filter as was suggested.

I know mine only took 6.25 quarts to bring it to full instead of the 7.1 the book called for, go figure?

I like to get the level just right when I change oil. That way when I look at it a few months from now I know what I'm looking at.
To get it on the mark, I slightly overfill, run it a while, and then use a large clear plastic syringe with a thin plastic tube attached to the end to suck out the extra. That tool aslived in my toolbox for years now. Originally came from either the local farm&hardware store or NAPA.

I've always preferred to get the level about halfway between MAX and MIN.

Depending on how over filled you are, you may be able to just swap out your oil filter. If you do, put the currant one in a plastic bag and reinstall next oil change.

This is the answer. You can also just dump the oil out a couple times to get it level or below the line a bit. Smart thinking to know you need to fix this overfill. It can cause more problems than you would think.

My L3400 calls for 6 qt. with filter, I did that when first changing the oil, it was way above the dot on the dipstick, but the book says 6, the dealer said 6, so I took the tractor for a test drive and the smoke that came out of the exhaust said there's tomuch oil in the motor, there was so much smoke I could barely see where I was driving. I shut it off took one drain bolt out, a couple times to bring it back down to the dot, now I put only 5 qts. in and that brings it right to the dot on the dipstick.

So if we have dealer saying one thing, mechanic doing another, book agreeing with one, both, or neither....and then there is are the marks on the dipstick. Which one to believe? I've never known the dipstick marks to be wrong on any engine - but how would I know?

Were you pulling the drain bolts on BOTH sides of the drain pan.

Only pulling one would probably leave ~2 qts in there.

Also, did you pull the dipstick or oil fill cap. Cause the engine is sealed up tight, and the oil only flows a little out then slows down and appears there is no more in there (vacuum).

I always change my oil when it's good and hot, let it drain a few minutes and often I need more than the book tells me. Not so with my Deere790 that calls for 4.3 quarts and takes 4.0 quarts. Beats me.

I took just the dipstick out to get it to drain faster and then I let it sit with both drain plugs out for maybe a half hour before re installing them. 6 and 1/4 quarts brought it right up to the full mark after running it for a bit to get the oil circulating. Came back the next day and it was still right on the upper mark with 6 1/4 instead of the 7.1 it calls for ? Got to go with the dipstick, I don't know?
