How many of you keep a "backup vehicle"?

I had backup vehicles for years but they never payed. Around here I can get a nice rental for $35 a day out the door or $150 a week. At that cost I have went as much as 5 weeks between vehicles due to selling my BMW and waiting on our Edge to come in. It cost us no more than a car payment and insurance.

I keep my 72 Valiant as a reliable back up vehicle... insurance is less than $80 a year and tags another $80... and no need to have a smog check... as 1975 and older vehicles are no longer required to have them.

It's got a trailer hitch and roof rack so it some in handy to tow the utility trailer in a pinch...

My backup (third) vehicle is my tractor. I sure hope I don't need to drive 6 miles into the closest town on a winding hilly county road at 8mph max! :D Might hold up a few folks.

We had a lot of spare vehicles and now with two 17 year old's we are down to one which is good so if we have a flat tire and have to leave for town quickly (20 miles) we have an option.

DP, I thought you had 2 trucks? Do you not consider that a backup?

I joke about driving my tractor to the nearest small community (about 3 miles west) when I need to pick up a six pack or get a haircut, but my homeowner's policy only covers my tractor "on premises" and it is frightingly expensive to add coverage so I can operate it off them.

Who is your insurance company? I have a personal article policy at State Farm for my tractor and I don't remember the exact numbers but I think it was only another $6-8/mo to get the coverage off-premises so I went for it in case I want to clear neighbors' drives and because I am trailer shopping so that I can help friends out with projects in the spring.

My AAA agent told me it was close to $55 a month but that was a few years ago.

Earlier I posted about my backup situation so I won't be redundant with that. What I will say is that it's been almost 2 weeks since the F250 that I bought new back in April has been washed. It's' still sitting in the garage all shiny and the odometer hasn't moved. In the meantime the old backup has taken all the salt, sand and miles for the majority of the winter so far as well as saving over 4k on the clock of the truck. But the truck will still come out if I need to get out during snowy weather and 4WD might come into play.
