Just went out to start the tractor and it won't crank over. I turned the key back for the glow plugs and everything lit up on the dash like normal. Turned it to the on position to crank it and got nothing, no crank. Battery is good and there's power going to the starter according to the volt meeter. I checked the three fuses I saw and they were fine. Are there any other fuses? Any ideas? Thanks!

What does your volt meter read right at the starter when the key is turned to start position? (Takes two people to do this) Can you jump across the starter solenoid when the key is turned to the start position and get any starter action? (Takes two people to do this) Try to determine if the proper voltage is getting to the starter and whether the solenoid is energizing properly.

Sounds like one of the safety switches is open and not allowing a start. Check your seat, ptos and neutral levels for proper position and look for a disconnected wire under the platform.

I can reach to test it in the on position. It reads 12.4 volts but when I turn the key it dims considerably. I'm alone so I can't jump across the starter. Maybe the battery is weaker than I thought. I just the charger on it to see if it makes a difference. The only other thing I can think of is I was testing the glow plugs with the volt meeter and got a spark off of one by accident. Not sure if that could blow something out?

I was thinking that to. The one for the seat has been disconnected forever. I'll check the others. I do hear a "click" from under the seat when I turn the key to the glow plug position. Don't ever remember hearing that before.

If you have a voltage drop upon starter application, you have a bad connection either at the battery terminals or the frame ground. Try jumping the battery to get it started. If it does, let it run a while and then try to start again. Clean the terminals and try again.

It's definitely a weak battery. I put the charger to it for 10 minutes and it cranked over. I suspect this has to do with my glow plugs not seeming to work as well. The battery is only a couple years old so I figured it was fine. Always go for the obvious first I guess!!!! Anyone have a recomendation for a battery??

Check the water level in the battery before you pitch it. If it is low, add distilled water and put on the charger for a day. Also if it is low, check your voltage when charging, should be 14.3 tapering down to 13.9 or 14.0. It could be over charging and evaporating the water.

I'll do that. If I do replace it is it OK to go with a maintenance free sealed battery?

I have never put anything more than an automotive type lower priced battery in any of my contraptions. Maybe someone will comment on what they feel is a quality battery worth the extra money. Look for a warranty that lasts longer than carrying it out the door, probably says more about the quality than anything else.
