Rocky, a dealer first considers what he can retail the unit for. A customer wants to save 25% or more or he will buy new, especially if he wants to finance and/or is risk intolerant and wants a new warranty. When a dealer sells a used tractor, he often does some service and then hauls it for "free" and he also wants to make some profit. Let's take your tractor out of the equation and make up a sample. A tractor that sells new for $15k and is 4 years old with a couple hundred hours might retail for 75%, $11,250. The dealer has $750 in hauling, service and prep. Then he wants to make 10%. Do the math and that tractor might be traded in at around $9-9.5k. If you retail it yourself you will do better, but many folks really dislike having strangers come to their house, etc.

You might look at the new 2555HST Cab. It has a tighter turning radius than the 4035 and lifts about 3000lbs. Make sure you fill the rears with RimGuard and keep some ballast on the back. The short wheelbase and strong loader causes back wheelies if you don't.

HST is much more practical doing precise loading work. Better yet, but a cheap forklift for unloading...but that does not give you a cab tractor for winters.

Besides the engine, are there any other significant differences between the 2555 and the 5010?

The 5010 gear has been changed to a shuttle in the 2555 series. On the HST models, the changes are mostly just the engine. If you can find a remaining 5010 HST cab, that would work well for you as you don't need the extra HP.

They now make your series in a cab. The 3550 cabs are slick!

I like HST and would never buy anything without it but I'm drooling over the newer style HST. Kubota's HST+ seems to be the best but the NX series from Kioti now has a watered down version where the forward and reverse pedals can control engine RPM. I believe they also have stall control. Unless you're doing PTO work like snowblowing, there's no need to have the engine screaming away at a constant RPM. The more you push on the HST pedal, the more RPM you get, otherwise, you can work in relatively peaceful cab, listening to music that you don't have to blare to hear over the engine. Not sure if Mahindra has this type of HST, but it would be a big consideration in my decision.

I've had an aftermarket cab, a factory built aftermarket cab and now a factory cab. There's no comparison. Even though you use your tractor primarily for snow removal, A/C is a must. Keeps you cool in the summer obviously, but keeps the windows fog free in the winter as well. They're also MUCH quieter.

I've lost exactly no sleep over trading to a tractor with factory cab. Life's short...

Deere, Kubota, Massey and Kioti all have eHST. Deere, Massey and Kioti are the easiest to set up and use since Kubota added their control to a single button menu system that is difficult to make work in comparison to the others.

regarding clutches:

20 years ago, I overhauled the engine on my 1952 Ferguson. The engine was tired after 40 years of heavy use, needing everything done to it.

I did a complete front to back, top to bottom engine overhaul and when I got to the clutch, I could see no reason to replace the disk or pressure plate as they were absolutely perfect. I did replace the throwout bearing. As far as I could tell, they had never been replaced, as the previous owner had it for many many years and had not touched it. There was also no indication that the engine had ever been taken apart.

I used it for about 20 years, put thousands of hours on it, and gave it to my son last year. I have never adjusted the clutch in all that time. As far as I can tell, it might be 60 years old and still going fine.

Unless someone is really abusive to it, they last for a long, long time.
