Good morning all. -1F this morning and clear low wind otherwise my wind chill would sound like I was in New England! Forecast for 20F and low wind and clear. My new wood has good heat content and is burning well over all. Fireplace is going, set up stationary trainer, will be March before I can train outside again :(

RS, glad you fixed your tractor.
Thanks - me too.

Can't imagine not having it ...
Yeah ... we'd be pretty much screwed without it ...

The prospect of me having to haul firewood to the house by hand, on foot ain't real inviting ... might work for a day or two but after that the likelihood of potential adverse consequences goes way up.

and you continue to amaze me at what you are able to fix/make/design.
Probably has something to with necessity being the mother of invention ... :D

While I was splitting some red oak in the last week I thought of you. And chuckled thinking: Now RS, here goes the wood into the woodpile where it will sit patiently drying out, so that come Fall like a fine wine, it will be at its peak.
And then I promptly burned some of it a few days later, and yeah, some of it hissed, but you get the fire going hot first, then dump on that slightly wet wood.
Exactly ...

Surely not as good as burning dry, seasoned wood ... but it's workable.

Funny thing:

Back when I cleared the pad for the barn I had more wood than I knew what to do with - most of it ash. Then right after we got free gas ... so it didn't end up being used and eventually became compost ...

And when they put in the gas well they cleared about an acre of woods - mostly maple and ash. Gave all that away to a neighbor ... I think he's still got a pile of it he using to heat his shop.

Brings to mind the old saying: You don't know what you've got until it's gone ...

C'est la vie ... :D

It was dead falldown wood, so it had dried out, then gotten wet just laying out there of course.
Yup ... have the same going on here with some of what I've tried to burn.

I'm trying not to buy wood with all this wood around me, just have to go out and get it.
Look for ash (Fraxinus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) ... if you have some on your property you can harvest it and it burns very, very easily - even unseasoned. Very low moisture content. We have a lot of (volunteer) green ash here on the property.

Besides, it always burns better if you cut and split it. And when you get to that knotty knurly hunk, as you throw it into the fire waiting for the cracks and pops, you remember when you split it. Crack, grrrrrrrr, crack crack. Your tune may vary.
;)

Sorry to hear about yellow its hard to lose a pet and friend.
Good morning! 41˚ heading to 65˚almost clear skies - nice day. The Jet stream is keeping all that cold air to the East which is fine with me.

I was out washing the car in a t-shirt and shorts yesterday. Of course, like everything I touch lately, the pressure washer didn't come on until I took it apart and fixed the sticking pressure switch. Our Yellow cat of 17 years died peacefully yesterday. He just walked out and laid under a tree to die. We brought him in where it was warmer and he lived for about 4 more hours. Yellow - RIP
