To Yield or Not

Yep, I have seen this at ramps and intersections of interstates with secondary roads also. This is the first I've come across one between two roads as such. Also, she was rather presumptuous that I would be yielding given the fact in her direction there are no signs indicating to her that my lane would yield. As I mentioned before, if it were reversed and I was making the left turn then I'd not take the right of way, for that reason.

I don't recall ever seeing a sign saying that the other street has the ROW. Lacking any signs as lal, you have the ROW.

It would be common courtesy for both vehicles to adjust to allow the smoothest traffic flow. But even if you didn't have the yield sign, the vehicle turning left would have the right of way.

Correct. It is no longer a main route but a side street merging into a superior street.

Sorry Randy, I completely disagree with that statement. That would imply a driver would need to yield every time he approaches a vehicle with a left turn signal on. And what if the oncoming driver was not using their signal, which is more common than ever. Does that mean I should stop just because it appears they 'might' make a left turn in front of me. Yeah, that would really honk off the drivers behind me.

To get the logic behing the signage (it is common throughout the states), mentally move the intersection a 100 ft up the entery lane. Clearly the left turned traffic would have the ROW even without the Yield sign. No you don't have to yield to any car with a left turn signal going. If there is room to merge ahead of him you can. A car that has already completed or nearly completed the left turn, you would have to yield.

I guess we are just a bunch of hickbillies that don't appreciate these new ways to side step plain old stop and go rules. Heck most folks here can't get a 4-way stop correct. :D

Lacking anything else, just obey the traffic signs and you are OK.

OK, so this is hysterically funny now. :dance1: I drove through this intersection from all three directions this evening on the way home from work. There is NO yield sign for the cars approaching from the right, as that "other driver" so adamantly assured me there was. Probably a good thing that our paths won't cross again.

There's no sign there so I did have the right of way and she apparently tried to use the excuse of there being a Yield sign on my side to cover up her dangerous error. I'd sure to love to see the look on her face now.

The best part of all this, at least to me, is that I was in fact alert and did not miss a traffic sign. The worst part is I assumed she was correct and started all this hullabaloo without validating her claim.

Sorry guys and gals!

As an added benefit I won't need to go there any longer to "see how many yield" because there is no Yield sign. :D

Best be checking your traffic laws.

When you entered the off ramp you were merging and required to yield unless the signage indicated otherwise.

No ramps or interstates in this case. The horizontal traffic is a two lane road and the vertical is simply a two lane road to a shopping mall.

Beginning this afternoon I am going to approach that intersection from the left at least once EVERY DAY and be sure to honk my horn at every driver turning right that does not yield to my left turn. I wonder how long it will take for my horn relay switch to fail. LOL! :D It may be common or typical but that sure doesn't mean it makes sense.
Apparently, your problem is attitude.

Basicallyi if there is no singnage indicating otherwise, i.e., no sign at all, you have the right of way.

Well, think about a standard intersection -- if drivers coming from the opposite direction are turning to the same side street, the one making the right turn has the right of way and the person making the left turn (across the other lane) is supposed to yield to the right turner. Nobody has signs in that case -- it's just common rules of the road that say the person turning right has the right of way over the person turning left. I think that aspect of it was was the OP found perplexing, and I agree to some extent.
