That little valve is in the top part that looks like a box in the bottom left corner I believe.
I think you are correct, with the single screw.
He said nothing was wrong with my old one, but the 2 parts are maybe .50 each.
Some engines may have a different designed reed valve.

But when you look at the engine installed, it's not easy to get to this little rascal.

Thay picture of the motor. That little valve is in the top part that looks like a box in the bottom left corner I believe.

thanks guys,
didn't want to do it, but I can see it is not an easy fix. I will use it a few more weeks before getting into it, still need it for snow. todays high... 8 degrees, Sunday's high -1 degrees. sure don't help buffalo's reputation. on November 11 we got 78'' snow. no choice, had to use the massey on that one. I can use the massey with the loader, but it's just easier to use a plow in a stone driveway. by the way, I forgot how to add photos to this, can you tell me how to do it again

thank you yellow fever, being so cold, i finally was able to look at the tractor. i checked the compression 190 and 170, 170 being on the one that has the more fouled plug. i vented it to the bottom of the motor till spring, put in a new air filter. i am hoping that the dampness in the garage ( from snow and salt from the cars) partially plugged the air filter ( along with the oil on it), hoping when it gets dry out, the problem will get better. i still used it all winter for plowing, and it did a great jobjohn deere 445 6.jpg

A good quick check without to much guess work to determine if a engine has blow by is to remove the dipstick and place a balloon on the dipstick tube and start the engine. I keep balloon in my tool box for this. I used too years ago buy them at five and dime stores since most of them are gone, I now shop for balloons at novelty or craft stores.

i will give that a try, I do think there is enough to start blowing up the balloon. I checked the compression again, I have 210 and 190, but as someone told me I could have great compression but still have a cracked oil ring or one not seated right. I will try the test, thanks again

I have a 425, and had the same problem, along with rough running, would die after 10 minutes of running, black smoke, surging, have to keep the choke on, etc. My neighbor and i took the carb apart and cleaned it to within an inch of its life, installed new plugs, and a new Time Delay module. Still no luck. We then used carb cleaner and sprayed around the carb as it was running to find a vacuum leak. None found. We figured it was getting too much air and leaning it out too much. On a whim, my neighbor took a pair of needle nose pliers and pinched the little rubber hose that runs to the bottom of the carb from the carb vent solenoid. The engine IMMEDIATELY ran right. I am going to try running with that vent blocked and see how she goes.
