Grease Guns

Being around equipment and trucks all my life, I have lots of time with a grease gun. Lincoln used to make a good gun, but the last couple I got were junk.
I think Alemite makes the best quality guns.

And if you buy an electric avoid the 12V and get the 18V or 20V.

Agree. Like the Dewalt It has already out lasted the lincoln, seems to be heavier and bulker than the lincoln. Hasn't been an issue. I'm from the days where you draged that 25 gal grease bucket on wheels, with an air line connected to it and a 25 ft grease hose. So, this beats that big time.

Whew, who would've though just getting a good quality grease gun would be so hard! I still don't know which one to get! Ale mite, eh? I'll check that one out.

Just as a side note. I have enough problems with zerks and broke down and bought one of those (name brand) grease busters or something like that, at the Louiville Farm show. You know the brass syringe thing you fill with solvent and hit with a hammer. Never once has it fixed a zerk I could not get grease into! Total waste of hard earned money!

I've had a different experience with the hammer powered zerk clearing tool. I won't say it has worked every time but I have about a 75% success rate Key is getting all the air out of the device before putting it on the zerk.

I will add though that given the cost of the device (?$30), you can buy quite a few new replacement zerks for the same money. Also, blocked zerks frequently respond well to overnight soaking in diesel or PBBlaster.

I've been through several grease guns and also have the Lincoln electric 12v gun. While the electric works, the case is big and a bother to store and the niCad batteries don't last more than 4-5 years and are expensive to replace.

I've gone back to the system Koua recommended: Lincoln lever gun with lock and lube tip. Couldn't be happier.

Funny (now) story. I was in contact with the inventor of this device in the year 2000. Got to know him quite well. At the time he was having them machined in small batches (30-50) at a local machine shop. No quality control whatsoever. His distribution system consisted of a daily walk to the post office. Real nice guy.

I was in the process of acquiring manufacturing rights for Canada. Long story short, his local 'lawyer' partnered up with him and convinced him to manufacture off shore.
Not certain but don't think that was overly successful.



Still have a box of them sitting around.

Just bought a Milwaulkee 18V version. $160 with charger and battery. Wife plotzed. I told her that grease is super hard to pump out in the winter. She told me to loose some weight. I told her my wallet was thinner, she said it wasn't enough. I suggested to her I knew how to loose 150lbs of ugly fat. Spent the night in the garage with my new grease gun.

On a somewhat related issue here's a few photos of grease gun cartridge holders I had a local plastic shop prototype for me out of ABS.

The plan was to market them to petroleum product distributors etc as promotional devices with their logos on them in addition to end users.

But that's another story

I went shopping last week Farm and home had all 3 Dewalt, Lincoln and Milwaukee. Sales person a farmer talked me into a Milwaukee. He said they had less problems with it over the Lincoln of which I have had 2 of over the years. I do like it but haven't used it that much. Will get a work out in the coming weeks. So far it feels good and I like it with the handle on top that I can support myself while crawling under the motorhome.

Ok got my 18v DeWalt. My first thought was, "WHAT HAVE I DONE??" Bought more "stuff." I have too much stuff.

But then using it,,,,, this thought passed quickly. It allows you to watch the joint, how the grease comes out. I found a joint that wasn't getting greased properly because it was easier to pay attention. Its easier, and I know it will result in better maintenance. I just hope It doesn't cause me to avoid greasing if I don't have it (if no battery, for example)

Battery thing is a pain. In my opinion it beats dragging an air hose behind you. I have thrown out perfectly good tools because it was cheaper to buy whole new tools than replace the battery. I switched everything over to the dewalt 18volt battery. The 18 volt Nicad are cost effective, but heavy, you can get them apart to rebuild them. I know they don't last as long, but if you can affornd enough of them to keep one on charge.... Lately dewalts 18v bare tools have been dirt cheap, so everything is there痴 stuff now. Even got there florescent flash lite. Pricy but nice. Have lots of batteries this way. That is why I went with dewalts grease gun as opposed to say Milwaukee.
