Installing Alternator instead of generator on YM146?

I checked all over for rebuilt alternators at this size 3.86" across. No one has them. The cheapest I could find is at db electric. Let me know if you find one cheaper.

How does it work? Been thinking about the conversion for quite some time and was hoping to hear a little feed back on the performance of the new alternator. Any disappointments or surprises once completed?

Set up has worked perfect. Battery charging at 14.4V even at low idle speed. No problem with the space either. Probably the toughest part of the job was the belt size, I had to go back 3 times till I got the right size. I thought the bracked would be tough but the bolt alignment and horizontal alignment worked great. I am very happy with how it turned out.

no offense, but after getting the 2nd wrong belt, I think I would have taken the tractor to the belt shop to save future trips

Battery still charging with no problems. Anybody who was problems with their generator or more likely their regulator, should do this conversion. You can do it cheap if you have the room. But if space is an issue you have to use a racing alternator. These alternators come in a 94mm case 3.86" diameter. And are about 4 inches long.

I'm sure there are variations in wiring depending upon age of your tractor so I'm not sure how you would go about connecting the idiot light to have it function properly.

How much trouble is it to put that in place of the little pancake dynamo? Same mount and adjustment arm?
