2" receiver mount for Harbor Freight 12,000lb winch

I walked down back to the scrap pile, and took some pictures of this old donkey I built years ago. It's been right at a hundred years since I used it:laughing:. But I don't ever remember having trouble with the wire rope not wrapping up on the drum correctly. Maybe the reason why, is the frame is wide enough to hold the drum of the winch perpendicular to the wire rope.
I can see where a guy might have trouble if the winch pulls off to one side when the wire rope is to the far side of the drum, right or left.

Wait a second SA... I am doing the math and something does not add up. A couple months ago you had only been welding for two weeks or so.. :confused3:

That deck winch looks like its bolted down though. I need a way to enforce the 1-18 rule with a winch with 3/8" rope that's laying on pine needles. And all eqpt carried on an ATV. :thumbsup:

Maybe the "forest mount" just needs a long 'tail' with a grab hook welded on the end? Something like this except "solid" without that swivel joint at the receiver.

That plus a bipod to keep it from flipping around under tension. Lets see, then it needs wheels so you don't strain your back getting it into position. Maybe you should just mount a rail to the belly of your ATV, put a receiver at each end, and have a clevis attachment to anchor one end to a tree.

I like that idea. Lets you keep everything together and easily movable.

Boy I would start with a different winch. You must have a strong back. I just bought one of those Harbor Freight 12000lb winches and that thing is heavy. Along with your homemade receiver adapter I doubt I could pick it them up together. Much less hold the thing up while trying to strap it to a tree or something.

It does work good though. I needed it right after I got it mounted to the tongue of my trailer. I made the fair-lead height adjustable so I could lower it to pull vehicles and things on the trailer, and raise it up high to pull firewood logs onto the trailer.

You ain't kidding. I'm having second thoughts about how far I want to go off in the woods with it unless the ATV can deliver it to the right location. And I have to bring a battery too. It fits in the receiver on my ATV.

Finished the handle / rollbar, and now its more reasonable to move it around but what a chunk.

Looks great and that is a beast! Nice job. Makes my little 2500lb HF guy that is sitting on my workbench look a little silly.:ashamed:

Buy the 2500 lb winch at the same time to move the 12K winch.

I've been known to run the cable from the fairlead up to a pulley and back down to the winch body so it is supported when I slide it out of the receiver...and my three "big winches are only 8000lb units. When making winch mounts I try to include a lift point on the top.
