I agree 100%. Buying the cab hurts once at purchase. Not buying it hurts every time you use it in hot or cold weather.

+1 The cab is an investment that pays a dividend every time it is used!

Hehe....well, if I spend more than the wife wants, it hurts everyday until I die, lol.

Well, she does want me to make her a trail she can walk/jog on around the acreage. Maybe I can get a cab out of that, lol.

I'm in the process of building a bridge over the creek and smoothing a trail around the 50 for the wife too!

The one that made my life easier was when the wife hit an icy rut and ended up down in the brook up to the rocker panels in ice water. She really did not want it left until morning so half the town would know the bus driver went off the road. Freezing weather of course just to make it interesting. Three miles down the road I went , very glad of the soft cab that was just a couple of weeks old. Eased her Toyota rav 4 up and out of the brook with no damage. Darned cold standing in the brook knee deep in ice water hooking the chain. Three miles back with cold wet pant legs but not that bad inside the cab. It would have been torture out in the open with the spitting snow. I haven't heard a bad word about the tractor sense and she even gets possessive if she thinks I'm not taking good care of it.

The more and more that I read the forums here, I realize I don't need a big tractor for what I want to do now....but I should get a bigger tractor as future insurance for when I do want to bale and plant crops, lol.

If all I want to do is grade my road, dig some postholes, shred a little bit, rototill some, and move 4x5 round bales, do I need HST? Do I need a cab? Can I go with a smaller tractor with less HP (like a 3037)? Is the weight of the tractor more important than HP?

I am back and forth between the 3037 and the 4040, mainly because the front wheels are bigger on the 4040, so it won't be such a rough ride out in the pasture. I am wondering if I should trade the HST for a cab.

I am trying to stay around $25K to keep the wife onboard.

You don't "need" a cab. I have never had one and have paid my dues in the weather, so I got a climate controlled cab...

You don't "need" HST for any of the above tasks.

Weight is your friend when using a loader, as is MFWD. A 40-50hp utility tractor with out a cab will do all the above and more and should be under $25k. And remember when comparing power don't go by the engine HP, look at the PTO HP. That is the real number that will be apples and apples to any brand/model.

Cabs are really nice if you have to work your tractor in bad weather , ether very hot or very cold. Here in the north just an hour at below zero with a 10 mile per hour wind can make a cab worth it. Down in Dixie a couple of hours at 95 plus with ninety percent humidity will make an AC equipped cab your best friend for ever. But people worked for years without them so you certainly can get bye without them and on an average summer day they may well be in the way obstructing your vision of what is going on down where the tool is working.
Unless a lot of your work is to be done in adverse conditions I'd skip the cabs and go for straight utility and then hope the profits will buy you a cushy cabbed tractor down the road.

Awesome! Went through similar anguish trying to decide between the XR3037H and XR4040H for my first tractor just last month. Weight, bigger front wheels, and the higher PTO all contributed to the decision, and I'm already glad I picked the bigger horse. After mowing and scooping a little dirt 2 weeks ago, was very glad I chose HST.

Guessing you must've bought from RCO? Good folks and the delivery guy was awesome. Hope you enjoy!

Yep! RCO. Stuart was very patient with all my newbie questions and didn't try to up sell me to a bigger tractor. Unfortunately, they didn't have any box blades in stock, so now I am trying to hunt one down or maybe order one online. As everything tractor related, the more money the bigger and sturdier the equipment, lol.

If you have any money left I'm sure the guys at ETA could fix you up with a box blade PDQ.

I have their 72" box blade in my cart lol. But...the nearest freight hub is over 60 miles away if I want free delivery, so I am more likely to have it delivered to our farm. But if I pay for delivery then I should buy the other implements I will need in the future, right? Maximize delivery efficiency, lol?

I've been led to believe that 60 miles in Texas was considered next door neighbors and nowhere near far enough if your daughters were pretty.

Haha! Indeed. Time is money though, so a 2.5 hour round trip versus a delivery charge is what I am considering. Maybe I can make it a family trip though to make it fun for the kids.

It arrived!

Took it out for an hour and filled in some deep ruts. Got stuck for ten minutes digging in muddy pasture, lol.

Going to order a box blade from EA on Monday.

Just for some consideration. Maybe consider a roll over box blade. This way you don't have to stop and get off the tractor every time you may need the rippers. At 800lb or 850lbs, this will definitely get some work done for you and considerably less $$$ than a unit that has hydraulic actuated rippers. ;)
