Best way to trailer turbo'd tractor

I would back it on much easier to drive off than back off a trailer less chance for error. Then no need to worry about exhaust.

I recently saw an 18-wheeler pulling a trailer loaded with two huge Deeres, and the exhaust stacks were covered up with what looked to be a custom-made cover. Made me remember the recent thread here on TBN discussing this.

Not sure of the liklihood of a return flow path opening up through the engine/valves/cylinders to enable flow across the turbo exhaust rotor, but if it could happen, I suppose it's possible that it could spin up the turbo enough to damage its bearings. There won't be any oil or coolant pressure there to protect them.

The only turbo I ever handled (a desktop cutaway model off a production engine) was super light and spun very easily -- blowing on it with my mouth spun it up pretty good. So I don't think it would take much in the way of flow to get one cranking when towed.

This issue is not new and is legit, but your chances of burning up the turbo on your compact tractor is very slim to none.

The real concern comes from large equipment with larger exhaust pipes (6 to 10 inch range). This is one reason CAT and other large manufacturers have reacted and offers warnings.

Even then, there's no guarantee it will happen. In other words, you still need the perfect storm or really bad luck. There are thousands of pieces of equipment hauled everyday, some with the exhaust taped and some not with very few issues, but it can happen.

If it's a transportation company, then your likely to see the exhaust taped. If its a owner/operator lowboy, then you are more likely to see it open.

Just checking quick for some advice on how to trailer my mx5200 with a turbo. I have been taught that the force of air, such as driving at highway speeds, into/towards exhaust pipe can spin turbo without oil flow and cause turbo to burn out.

The exhaust pipe on mx5200 is down low by front left tire/axel. Pointing towards front of tractor.

My idea was to just back the tractor onto the trailer, thus no air forced up exhaust pipe. This way I have no modifications or covers to put over exhaust pipe, especially due to I dont have time to wait for pipe to cool after finishing one job, going to the next job.

Anyone have any info/advice or any other ideasI am not thinking of? Thanks again.

I know a operator that also moves the heavy equipment will load some pieces backwards or leave them idle when moving from one mine to another depending on what type of clay they need to fill an order to protect the turbo's on certain machines but not all of them.

Turbo vanes are not very efficient spinning backwards.

If there is a throttle plate in the intake path - its closed. So even if there are "valves on overlap", the airflow is probably not detectable nor sufficient to spin the turbo. If turbo bearings could be damaged like that, they wouldn't last a minute at full manifold pressure.

Heavy eqpt operators idling a diesel engine when unnecessary,,,,, that seems to me,,, to be a 'custom', paying homage to old trucks with leaky air brakes. I think mostly it just makes some fellers feel good !

Let me see. For this to happen the air would have to go in the exhaust pipe, then go into the exhaust manifold, thru the cylinder, through both the exhaust and intake valves (both open at the same time) then exit through the air filter.

Hmmm.

A new way to compression start your engine. Backwards. :D

The maker of exhaust covers says wind turns the turbo. :)

Turbo Saver Exhaust Cover

I think there is more possibility these turbo problems were caused by getting dirt, trash, leaves, birds, or rain in the system.

I can tell you guys this , when I bought my first big Deere tractor 4020 back in 1980 the guy delivered it had the exhaust was taped shut. I ask him why and he said he learned the hard way a little tape is cheaper than buying a new turbo for a customer I just sold a tractor to. Also a turbo turns a lot faster than one thinks , try 40,000 to 50,000 RPM under full load. One trick one can do to extend life of your turbo change the pluming so the oil intake and out take are horizional that way their is always oil in the case to lube the bearings.
