Drew a Dog would alert you when the Bear comes around.
AIADW, looks like you got some exercise there, the hay bales were a pretty neat idea, assuming you had an excess of it.

well, found out where the bears come from, not to mention the little cypress pond behind my house was called Bear Pond many years ago. Funny how the realtor missed that...;)
It appears that the edge of the largest woodlands in NC is only about 10 miles away, an extension of the Great Dismal Swamp. So bears leave the woods to see what's happening in civilization, like where to find some nice appetizers.

what worries me is whether a bear would climb my metal fencing to get in the orchard. I'm thinking harvest time when all that fruit is out there...

was nice to mow the orchard today for the first time after the fence people left. Just gives me a good feeling looking at all those healthy trees, and well, yeah, a few that just aren't going to make it. I bought a peach tree today on sale to replace one leafless tree, but I'm going to wait a few weeks and see if they will releaf. Maybe an botanical impossibility...

If it is a little black bear then probably not, a big one will try to push through the fence, but give up after awhile. and if it is a real hungry big Brown Bear, like this one DSC01774.jpg then it will rip your fence apart

Sleep well tonight :D

Kyle good news on your daughter.

Drew bear ?

Don and Kyle water skiing behind jet boats must be a Texas thing, getting hosed by the jet does not sound like fun for the skier  but entertaining for everyone else :D

Good morning.
It has been raining most of the night and set to continue on and off for most of the day.

Yesterday I finally got around to retrieving a huge piece of slate I got a few years ago to make a hearth for the wood burning stove. In the end we didn't use it as it didn't go with the way the house fireplace stepped back behind the brickwork. No matter, once trimmed down it can do that same job for the stove in my workshop.

20150502_174042.jpg

The slab used to form the bottom of a water tank, made in the days before we had steel or plastic, hence the hole in the bottom right corner. Didn't cost me much at the time, even so I have been really careful not to risk breaking it and loaded it onto a fresh pallet before I brought it back. Today I will wash the dirt off, see how it looks and where to cut. Any ideas on best way to polish the edge after cutting with a Stihl saw ?

Good look with the bears Drew.

up too early on a Sunday morning but at least I hope Roy is sleeping in.
Lots to do today, the prior owners of my home are coming over for a visit, elderly folk who are very nice and I'm sure it will be a nice time. Have met the husband, not the wife. I'll be cleaning and straightening for sure. And I think I'll throw a box of nine grain into the breadmaker and send them home with a loaf.

Mostly, Congratulations!! Lot of work and stress, hope it goes without a stumble and you find a marvelous new home.

Being a pacifist, my gun closet is a little slim compared to some of you guys...for sure.
But I do have an old pump shotgun my late wife was given by her father when we lived aboard our boat in Florida, he had read too many stories of Bahamian drug smugglers. I've never shot the thing so i guess I should get a box of something appropriate (all I have is birdshot now to dissuade small animals) and get my fireman helper, who has lots of guns, big hunter, normal around here, to teach me how to use it properly and safely. A browning pump with a lot of miles on it, action is slick as can be.

Not sure a bear knows what the sound of a pump shotgun round being chambered is, besides, I'm not even sure I can shoot a bear here legally. However no matter what....it will be self defense officer.

actually the only way to get rid of the bear is to remove the food source. But my birds...maybe there's an owl or two who can come down and peck the bear's head. Now that I'd like to catch on camera.

Kev, if I ever saw something like that big bear in my back yard, I'd move.

It's a bright sunshiny day here. Birds are up and singing. Just finished the first of the morning coffee. Grocery run today, followed by some chainsaw time-cutting up a downed tree from storms last week. Plan to close out the day with a few hours on the bicycle and then cooking something on the grill. May try and get some office work in, but had three day event go away, so I have Some "open" time on the calendar to get caught up, so may just take the entire weekend off from work work.

54 this morning and headed to 82 today. Sunny is the forecast for the next week or so. Next Monday and Tuesday are the next chances of rain.

Today is back to the chicken coop. They're all washed down, now to decake. Do that today and maybe tomorrow, just depends on how many loads come out.

Farmers around here are finally rolling. Anhydrous is going down as fast as possible. But then it needs atleast a week before planting, so it doesn't effect germination. Will be interesting to see how many planters pass the anhydrous rigs and worry about nitrogen once the corn is in the ground.

FELArmAligning.jpg

Got the two loader arms separated yesterday using a combination of cutoff wheel and demolition saw. Fortunately I was able to lift the heaviest of the two and get it onto the milling machine table without losing any fingers or toes. I took 0.205" out of the pivot holes to clean them up and have enough room for a decent thickness on the new bushings. Today the mating brackets get bored, then it's on to fabricating the new bushings and pins. Next week's trip to town will have me stopping by the scrap yard for some plate to reinforce the cracked loader arms and pick up some new Kubota orange paint. With all the grinding and welding going on, the FEL's gonna need it.

Drew, I'll be curious to see how the game cam works out for you. I've tried several times in the past to wade through all the reviews and find one without quality or use issues, but was unsuccessful. The one you chose looks like a winner, depending on which battery is used, so please report back once you've used it a bit, OK?

Kyle, it's a shame you had to remind the school people that special needs kids are just that. Hopefully they won't forget anytime soon.

Eric, I didn't know you could cut slate with a chain saw (Stihl). Is that what you'll use, or is it a different Stihl? I've used the edge of a diamond cutting wheel to smooth up granite, but a regular aluminum oxide wheel might work on softer slate. A flapper wheel would be easier to use if you can get it to cut. I know that the diamond wheel makes nice smooth cuts in slate, but the layers in the stone tend to separate. At least that was the story with the slate tiles I worked with last year.

52° headed for mid 70s today. Redneckgeek, Good job on not losing any digits while working on the loader arms.

I got one of our garden beds almost complete yesterday, the straw was a lot easier to put together. I think the next couple will go together a little easier.

That bed looks good. Did you do anything for a foundation? Or are they just setting on the ground.
