And drop the mower deck off before the dealer gets the tractor, if the deck isn't needed for service.
Says a lot for learning to service our own equipment.

This is very important for owners that may some day take their mower to the dealer for some kind of warranty work or repairs. Any and all safety features will need to be restored prior to them returning the mower to you. Seat switches, RIO switches, mower deck chutes, etc. will all need to be in place. These can be very expensive to restore to proper operation and will certainly cause some unpleasant surprises when you pick up the equipment.

That is one reason to have all "mods" done in such a way as to be easily restored in the unlikely event you need to have some warranty work done.

A very good tip. The first thing I did with my X530 was to remove the deck chute which allowed me to mow a heck of a lot closer and to fit the mower into areas where it would otherwise not fit. Thanks!

You people that fold up or remove the deflector on the deck really annoy me . Nothing like waving a loaded gun at everyone .

Especially when they are mowing the graveled shoulder with the deck discharge pointing toward the road.

Mine are removed, for better mowing and better distribution of mown grass clippings. I don't mow when "everyone" nor even "anyone" is around me. So relax and don't get your blood pressure up. :D

I am with you on this one.Had a village idiot sling a stone into the side of my new car when he had his deflector up.Of course he denied doing it,had to pay myself to have it fixed.GRRR..

I can't see another house from my yard so no concerns about anyone or anything getting hit from my mower unless they are in my yard. If that's the case you are correct about the loaded gun.

The riding lawnmower I bought the girls is a JD300 and of course has a RIO feature. The last of the girls is now in the process of moving south following their work so I'm going to have to start mowing two lawns. There will be a jumper in my future.
One thing that does annoy me is seeing a neighbor driving a lawn tractor with a grandchild in his lap. I've read that tragic story too many times to not feel queasy every time I see it.

BigBlue
It started when Sears was sued (and lost) not JD, and the other companies followed with RIO's. No JD lawsuit, IIRC.

There may be some local or state laws that require it (such as the left leaning CA laws) but I'm not aware if that is the situation.

Now the dealer insurance companies are involved in requiring that their dealers not allow a machine out their door without all safety devices in working order. That is done to lower the possible claims on the dealer that have to be paid by their insurance. So it is a vicious cycle.

I haven't actually checked but the story that was told was a guy backed over his 3 years old daughter in Cleveland while using a Yardmachine mower. There is a federal ANSI standard that requires the not mow in reverse unless you have a operator override system.

The, lack of a better term, first generation no mow in reverse wouldn't allow the deck to be running period if the mower was in reverse. The next generation which is what we have now, requires that the operator override the reverse system, providing the mower cannot exceed 1 mile per hour in reverse with the blades running..

I am glad they haven't put such stupidity on zero turn mowers. Likely because they cant figure out how to keep them as zero turns if they have a reverse lock out since you have to reverse at least one lever to turn or both if making a K turn.
