Alien Invasion - I want my pond back !

From the opening article in the series: "There is no water running in from elsewhere, all the ponds are filled by the rain."

There are plenty of spare buckets here to experiment with, but with the drought on there's not a drop of spare water.

Now that you have us all hooked, Eric, is there any special reason we have to wait a week for the next installment?

I will guess the level did not drop much for the first several days. Ground water (the earth adjacent to the pond should have a good bit of moisture in it if nothing else) will react to the water being removed from the pond and flow towards it.

It takes him time to conduct and produce the scientific pictures. Now, where was that book on siphons??? Did you mention the smoothness of the pipe's ID?

Between now and Friday, you too might like to have a guess at how far the water had dropped.

I doubt it will drop at all. The flow rate looks pretty low considering you have a 45 foot head. It could take years to empty that pond. Looks to me like the ground around the pond is saturated and will be refilling the pond as fast as you empty it.

This is better than that pallet thread!

"The yellow bucket"
The problem with air entering the discharge pipe has everything to do with water stream velocity and volume. So as long as the volume is high enough to keep the pipe full the velocity will be the same anywhere in the pipe. But when volume drops the water level in the pipe will drop to the bottom of the pipe diameter while it will speed up allowing air entering the pipe against the flow and stopping the siphon effect. The bucket or and elbow pointing up will prevent air entering the pipe regardless of water velocity.

My guess is that it will take for a while to drop the water level.
0.3 ac about 1400 sqft
to drop 1" of water in a day you need to drain about 6800 gal.
resulting in a rate about 4.7 gal/min assuming no inflow.

This is 1000% better than that pallet thread!

May it rest quietly in peace!

I thought he was draining the pond to see if any of the pallets were hiding (learning to swim) in there.

I'm going to go ahead and surmise that this 10 year odyssey has ended with or will end in an afternoon with one of these image.jpg
