mowing down by creek this morning with the MF and the tractor stalled, and wouldn't start. Battery terminals corroded. Walked back to the house and got the jump starter, went back down with the riding mower (had my son walk down to take it back), got the tractor started and mowed till lunch. After lunch cleaned up the battery terminals and it started right up. Need a new bolt though, it's about corroded thru. Beautiful Memorial Day here with great weather. I'm fortunate to still have my Dad who is a WW2 veteran.

Thanks to all that served our country.

Internet is back up, yea.

WOW! that was a storm this afternoon - 4" of rain high winds and hail. (thats after 3.5' yesterday).

A lot of Austin is flooded this go around.

I'm on an Island again except this time the water is 2' higher and the island is getting smaller.
My spillway is like a river.
The roads are flooded more than yesterday. I just hope after the water goes down the gravel road is still there.

You folks are getting hammered. CNN has some incredible photos of the flooding, Also the Austin Statesman newspaper web site. I hope you get some relief soon but the coming week has more storms by the sound of it. Stay safe.

76F and mostly cloudy @ 22:30 ... rain threatened all day, but other than a couple drops (literally) we got nuthin' ... word has it them guys down in Tejas is hoggin' it all (stay safe Texicans)

So I was left resorting to my little four-wheeled water buffalo ... hauled 220 gallons this morning, 55 gallons at a time. Gave a couple of lilacs, the new hostas behind the shop, two redbuds, a crabapple, and an oak what I'm sure was a welcome drink. And watered a crabapple and dogwood behind the house while I waited for the water buffalo to fill.

On the last load, ran into in neighbor and his extended family ... he was walking down my way. Wanted to know if he and the family could use my "field" (my front lawn) to play a little baseball. I guess he must have figured that actually asking was just some kind of a formality ... since they already had the bases laid out.

I sez "Absolutely ..."

Pretty funny ... but it looked like the kids had a good time:

After that I took the mower off and put the loader back on and hauled down another 5 buckets of topsoil. But before I brought down the topsoil I gathered up the rotted landscape timbers and hauled them down to the brush pile.

If ever there is a good example of why I'm not inclined to use wood - even PT wood - for landscaping next to the house this would be it - insides all chewed up from carpenter ants:

After that I cut some more rebar and helped the 'Cake stake up the peonies:

Then she and I cleaned up the bed around the crabapple (still need to get that bed around the lilac):

and the redbuds out front ... and added some of the newly screened compost:

Sorry about your mom. Sounds like a great person with a lot of stories. Care to share any?

And thank you and all the others for your service to our country. Freedom ain't free.

Thank Kyle. I remember one story she told........one evening she was changing the bandages on a Marine who had suffered some real bad injuries to both legs. I remember her telling us that the Marine was studdering and kept saying........"You need to look up....you need to look up". Mom apparently kept working on the guy when a voice from behind said........"I appreciate what you are doing for that Marine young lady.......you keep working!" When she turned around......she was face to face with Admiral Chester Nimitz.
She was my wife's mom and met her husband who was injured in the war at the same hospital. They were married for over 50 years......Dad passed in 91. Yea she was quite a lady. Thanks to all for their sacrifice and commitment.

Then while taking a coffee break we weeded out this little area in front of the garage. Don't think it's been touched so far this year ... was pretty grown up with weeds:

The blue hostas in the back came from a plant I bought last year and split into 6 ... they seem to like the area (no direct sun) and are doing well. Should be able to split 'em again this year, if how they are doing currently is any indication.

The variegated ones out front are from another one that I split last year that needed to be moved from the bed around the AC unit.

While we were out there doing that, we had a visit from one of these little guys (sphinx moth) ... who was investigating the taste treats the rhody on the left (above) had to offer:

Just be careful with flooded roads Don. Between growing up with Flash Floods in NM and the Hurricanes over the last 30 years here in FL, I can attest that moving water is not something to mess with... unless of course you like Kayaking? I have 4 in my barn just incase.
