Moving to the Farm

Month old calves would take much of the risk out of it. They might cost a little more, but are more likely to live.

When we did square bales, I was the kicker. Nothing made me happier than when we bought a round baler. That was in 1978. We were still using that same baler until a couple of years ago. We planted our last hayfield in longleaf pines this year, so I guess it's safe to sale it.

I bought Margie a couple of apple persimmon and an olive tree yesterday. The lady at the nursery gave me a huge stack of pots and a couple of trays from her trash pile. I love getting found stuff.

The month old calves are going to cost the same as the less than week old calves.

Free stuff is the best. Just ran over to pick up buckets from the grocery store as they have been saving them for me.

Now it is starting to look like a farm.

Yes it does... do you think you may start raising your own in the future?

My best childhood memories were time spent at my Grandparents small Dairy Farm... had been in the family going back the the late 1700's... My cousin ended up with the place and slowly started selling off the herd, then most of the equipment... and now land... sad when there is no there there anymore.

Just curious what's a ball park price in your area???

I think if I raise them in the future I may get a Dexter Heifer and AI her. Something more manageable.

That is sad, although I know it is harder and harder to make it as a farmer. I am lucky that I don't depend on any of my farm "hobbies" for income. Although I think we'll do ok on the couple of these we eventually sell.

Nice looking "herd". Have you thought about keeping one of them for a milk cow? Or are all of them bulls?

How much land do you have for them to graze on?

All steer. I may get a milk cow at some point, but not yet.

I have 4-5 acres and my brother in law has about three a couple miles away. We plan to rotate them back and forth.

We may also sell one or two this fall before having to feed over the winter.
