Bevelling Steel Pieces for Welding

My 4x6 jet will cut to within a degree of perfectly square every time. It's how you set it up and how you break in your blades. $100 off CL and the previous owner put some metal through it too (it's well used).

1/4" needs a bevel if you can't get the heat in the puddle. I started on a 120v MIG, so I remember those days. I just got a 120v Hobart for field work in the woods and it's depressing when the thermal protection kicks in. Makes me miss my real welders back in the shop.

For 2x2 square tube I would probably just leave a gap for welding.
If a bevel was required I would use the belt/disc sander if the piece was a manageable length.

Was thinking belt sander also on the 1/4" stuff with 60-80 grit?

I get more use out of this upside down on metal, than I ever did right side up on wood. A 60 grit ceramic belt removes metal easily and lasts a very long time.

Eric. I'm embarrassed to say I'm not certain. The disc doesn't say, but it's quite a bit coarser than 60 grit. Maybe 36 grit.

Terry, changing the subject but looking at the background in your pic gots me to ask the question. What are you bending? Seems you have a nice set of bending tools.
