Dodge started later with the DEF, but I don't know the exact years. I know they started on the chassis cab stuff sooner.
So what you guys are pretty much saying go for anything 2011 or newer besides dodge.
Another option is to buy a Dodge with a Cummins and it comes from the factory bullet-proofed. There are also some good years for the D-Maxs. I find it ironic people are recommending a Ford truck and then passing on info on several thousand dollars in upgrades that are needed. I guess if the truck can be bought at the right price it might work out.
the rest of the truck was the toughest thing offered at the time.
We all have our own opinions but I still feel the Ford trucks are the best built of the 2000's. The gap has gotten very close but at that time it wasn't. That's said you can buy any brand you want and it will need something. The Dodges have tranny issues, front end issues, and they seem to be plagued by rust. The GM trucks have lower capacities and a much weaker front end compared to the others. Electrical issues seem to plague GM trucks also as do fuel and brake lines.
You will end up spending the money one way or another . The 6.0 is a terrific engine once bulletproofed and the rest of the truck was the toughest thing offered at the time.

I do agree with you. That's why we are looking at 6.0s. We had one and it beat anything. Besides the turning. But couldn't keep it going over3 months. Didn't bullet proof it
I still like my 7.3, though I've seriously considered the 6.7. The 7.3 is in the shop right now for $4600 in repairs but it's all running gear (thrust washers, drive shaft issues, front axle, hub and brake problems) and it's got 270k on it so it's to be expected that this stuff will wear out. The engine itself, has not needed anything done to it yet. I'm still on the original injectors and glow plugs and I work the truck hard. It doesn't start unless it's got a load to move.
It's funny that you can buy a 6.0 or 6.4 for less money than a clean 2001 - 2003 7.3. That alone should tell you something about those engines. Yeah, the 6.0 can be reliable but, all things being equal, I'd take the 7.3 or 6.7 instead.
