I would have gladly given you all 11 pounds of mine in 1959. Brown Eisenhower boots too.

I would have had a hard time "packing the gear" back then, I was kinda young and small then.:)

I'm hoping that I don't have to pack it any further than from the truck to the bench to shoot. When I compare the weight of a lot of the old milsurps that I've got vs. something like an AR-clone, it's really eye-opening. I would much rather carry an AR than Mosin-Nagant all day.

However, if I was going to have to try to bash some skulls with the stock, the Mosin would probably be my favorite. I figure the milsurps will have a lot of utility in the event of the zombie apocalypse. After all, Max Brooks said that the M1 Carbine was the best overall weapon for a zombie war, because of it's moderate caliber, magazine capacity, and construction that would allow for hand-to-head combat as needed....

Good luck and take care.

Here's one for the FWIW department.

When I was about 10 year old, (1948) my parents had some friends who had served in the Pacific during the war. They were somewhat reticent about relating their experiences, but I recall this one fairly vividly. The grownups were talking about the M1 vs the M1 Carbine. One of the fellows who had served in the Pacific told this story: They were on an island in the Pacific, recently taken from the Japanese, although there were still some pockets of Japanese on the island. He said several of them (GI's) were walking down this road, when a couple trucks approached. All of a sudden a Japanese soldier bolted from the vegetation at the side of the road and started running away from them...apparently, according to the story teller, he thought the trucks were tanks (Why he thought this I don't know).

He said one of the officers opened up with his carbine, emptying his clip and the guy kept on running. Another GI fired one time with his M1 Garand and the guy went sprawling. He said they examined the dead soldier, and he had 4 or 5 wounds from the Carbine and one from the Garand. His point was, they much preferred the Garand because it was much more effective, at least for the job it was designed for.

I've heard the stories about the 'inadequacies' of the .30carbine round, and how they don't stop enemy soldiers. I've always called BS.

The .30 carbine round has almost identical ballistic specs as a .357 magnum and very few people have ever run away from them after getting shot. Remember, they're the round that will 'go right thru an engine block'..not that that is actually true but is part of the lore surrounding the power of the .357. If they didn't work, the govt wouldn't have made more of them in a shorter time than any other military rifle...ever. They were made during WW2 and were still in use right thru Vietnam. I had one when I didn't have the Garand. Some may still be in use.

No one would argue that the .30-06 is not better than a .30 carbine as a stopper, but it is arguable that the .30carbine is a wimpy round.

I would love to have one; if I could afford it. I have always liked the esthetics of the rifle, and the round would be perfectly adequate for my purposes. I believe, if memory serves me right, that they were reproduced for the civilian market maybe 30 years ago...by either Ithica or Iver Johnson.

Wow! Imagine my surprise...there are quite a few out there who have or are manufacturing the M1 Carbine:

The Garand in my pic is a Springfield made in early 1944, and the carbine is a Winchester made in 1943 and is one of the guns in the very first shipment to the .mil.

If you are trying to say that our government always (or even sometimes, or possibly even once) makes the best decision ... well ...

The law of averages applies to the .gov as well. If they do enough stuff, sooner or later they'll get something right..even it's by accident.

I think they did here.
