Skidding Winches

What I seem to understand now:

Chain drive reduction to winch drum for pulling. No reverse gear, but the cable is controlled and released by a clutch and brake system on the drum. The winch pulls the load to the tractor, then the load is chained to the winch frame to be towed away, not towed by winch cable and brake.

Correct?

Thanks, the photos help a lot.

Before now it has been a magic orange box with a constant running pto in and a cable coming out, going in, and stopping. Being familiar with conventional winches, I had trouble figuring out what was going on inside, as it didn't act the same way.

They are very simple constructions, many people has more normal winches in mind and thinks to advanced
And many don't get how fast they pull, at 540 RPM its almost frightening fast.

Best part is, you don't need to run them at 540, so you can adjust the speed to your liking, with the throttle...

I winched out several walnut tree's with mine today, and if you know walnut tree's, they come out HARD, as they have a long tap root...

Because of the short pull, I double lined it...

BTW, I can skid logs with the winch body itself and/or the winch cable...with a bigger tractor, you can skid a pretty good sized turn...

PTO speed, (540 RPM) is very fast indeed. One really has to pay close attention to what is going on or trouble can arise faster than lightening.

BTW, the Igland model 4001 I have is designed to run on 35-70HP tractors.

I never said the list is complete; it's one of a thousand winch lists to be plucked off the net. It just exemplifies various configurations of working parts, etc. If you have a better/more complete one, bring it.

The list is only 12 years old. Lol

Got the scabbards mounted today. There's 1/4" UHMW PE liners in them which should last a while.
