For my JD 790, I would like to get a good solid non-oem battery. I have read that Optima makes a fine yellow top. Any recommendations? Best prices?

Optima is an AGM. I use a red top in my WRX because it is 12 lbs lighter.

I consider the Odyssey AGM to be the absolute best available. It is also sold as the Sears Platinum.

I'm a Interstate fan too. Also Interstate and Optima are the same company.
Interstate Batteries

Owned by same company but Interstate is one of the standard flooded cell batteries made by Johnson Controls while Optima is AGM. Var ta is another AGM brand sold outside U.S.

I have had the Odyssey batteries for several years and are my favorite. They hold a charge without the need of a trickle charger all year. For the vehicles with every day use I have the Walmart Everstart Max, since these stores are everywhere service is close and most are less than $80 for a 6 year battery. With about 25 batteries to maintain I can't afford to have all Odyssey batteries and not all sizes are available. Sears Diehard Platinum are Odyssey batteries but are only available in about 2 or 3 sizes.

Can't speak for all Walmarts- but ours sold Exide sourced batteries and personally had many of the ones I purchased fail within 3 years, a while back noticed that Johnson Controls was producing batteries for Walmart, same supplier for Les Schwab tire stores (north west US) and they have been very reliable, So have purchased a couple lately from Walmart and so far so good..

I agree with the 100% replacement, and find if they last this long without failure they will usually make if for the full life of the specs. I find that all most all brands of the starting batteries seem to be good enough these days. I do prefer to have a better quality battery for deep cycle and marine uses though.

Maybe not the best brand, but I got a Advance Auto Marine Starting battery for my 861 Diesel this past Spring. I read the Marine batteries were a little more robust than standard car batteries (they stand up to wave bouncing boat hulls) and this one had 800 CCA and was cheaper than a similar car battery with the same CCAs. It also has 2 extra connection terminals with a nut I can used if needed for accessories. So far, it has worked great, but I haven't had to use it in cold weather yet; time will tell.
