Replacing the old gear and spring mechanical alarm clock with a quartz crystal electronic timepiece has saved a good few seconds each day over recent years from not having to wind the thing up, but then again, I never ever lost one of those alarm clocks - not like last night ...
Got to bed and realized my mobile phone wasn't in my pocket. I remembered using it to check the time when I was in the field earlier, so I went back out to search while my wife rang the number. I followed the track, then zig zagged across part of the field while listening out for a ring tone. Fortunately it was face up and I saw the distant glow in the dark well before I heard it ring.
It was soaking wet on the outside with the heavy September dew, but all in working order.
