Transporting Bucket Truck in Pennsylvania

Have you checked on the price for an actual farm tag? When I lived in PA, I had farm tags on a dump truck but it's been too many years to recall what they cost. My insurer, Farm Family out of Albany, NY at the time required insurance on the truck even if I did not actually take it out on the road. Though, that cost was very minimal. Personally, sounds like an early Saturday or Sunday operation to me.

You have to be filing a schedule F tax form to get Farm tags in pa. They don't hand them out like candy anymore. Dont ask me how I know....:confused2:

I don't know where in Westmoreland you are, but 50 miles is about 3 hours round trip including loading. I'd just call a local excavating contractor or heavy hauler. Rates are around $100/hr for an RGN

I would have to dig through my old tax papers to figure out what year it was, early 2000 something I guess. I was operating as an LLC at the time.

Gotta' love the way things go here in KY. I would have to go retrieve one of my registrations to recall the exact verbage but when you sign the registration, you are acknowleging that it is for farm use. You see farm tags on all kinds of vehicles, kind of like the self inspection used to be in New Jersey.

When you sign that piece of paper you are saying that you will use that vehicle for farm use once that year.

Was at a transportation meeting put on at extension office by Kentucky Vehicle Enforcement. He was asked what the deal with that was. His story was it came about after a sheriff sat outside a church on Sunday and wrote tickets to all the farmers that drove their farm trucks to church. For "improper use of farm tags". Now you only have to use it once a year to qualify. The next question was "How do we prove we did". His answer was "How do I prove you didn't ".

Problem is if you get a temp tag they are going to want proof of insurance. I wouldn't think twice about just driving it home.

Gotta love it.

When I first moved here and was pondering how to register my dually, I spoke with the DOT rep before he came to review my operation. He said he had taken his farm tagged F150 to Conneticut to pick up a used horse trailer for non commercial use and it was completely legal. Worked for me, lol!

Yep. He went on to say that as long as the tags were kept on pickups and SUV's you wouldn't have any questions. But if you started putting them on your corvettes then you could get questioned. I have personally seen a farm tagged corvette.

There's two farm tags here. A 26k and a 38k. If you're going to travel out of state he recommended the 26k tag. There has been problems with other states wanting fuel taxes because of vehicle plates over 26k. Wife's SUV is tagged at 26k. As that's what we would travel in. My 3/4 ton truck is at 38k. To cover anything I might pull.

Check on "Special Purpose Commercial" plates. They are used on vehicles such as snow plows, front end loaders, road graders etc. It must be a vehicle that is only transporting itself, in other words you can't carry anything or pull a trailer with it. They are usually covered by business or farm insurance. Or you could tow it home with another vehicle.

I would be willing to bet if all you have insurance on is passenger vehicles and not a commercial policy that if something does happen on the way home that your insurance company will not cover it. A commercial vehicle such as a bucket truck is a totally different animal to insure than a passenger vehicle, unless you are with a really good company they are going to figure a way out of it if something happens, with that being said I would pick it up early on a Sunday morning before church and with a bill of sale in hand, drive it home, good luck.
