The USA Today article is worded incorrectly. VW didn't program the computers to produce phony results during testing. They programmed the computers to operate the emissions systems normally during testing, and at reduced levels when not testing. Read some other articles on it.

Here's another link showing the facts that VW used software to fool the test. The emissions equipment ONLY worked when being tested, then allowed excess pollution to be the norm going down the road. That is 'passing the test' sequence, while lying about the actual pollution being spewed while driving.

All of this effort points to a bigger issue, overly stringent emissions rules. The EPA have basically waged war on a market that has been destroying the diesel engine. Not just in car, but all diesel applications. The VW engine, does meet the rules, but in doing so, it negates the efficiency that diesels are known for.

Wrong. Poor air quality causes over 200,000 early deaths in the U.S. It may not be an issue in every community but it certainly is in many urban and suburban areas. Recall that more than two thirds of our population live in metropolitan areas.

The new normal is to use more fuel to do the same thing. That is one of the most counter intuitive concepts. If your to pollute less, then figure out how to use less fuel. I am not giving VW a pass, This situation just frames up the real problem.

The real problem is that truly clean diesel engines are not as efficient as new gas or gas hybrid power plants. To get the same level of power the diesel produces more noxious emissions.

The bureaucrats are managed by the politicians. The President is the CEO of all the federal agencies.

The big question now is does this effect the other models produced by VW? The gassers use the same software. This may very well bring VW down. I am sure other investors will come in and buy up the assets cheap.

Yep, pay them now (contributions) or pay them later (fines / taxes). For a business to play it's gonna pay when it comes to dealing with any kind of government or bureaucracy.
