Mosin-Nagant hex receiver

Dark bore means its coroded and or pitted. Many times dark bores clean up some, and -may- shoot ok, just depends.

I think you might just be happier and $ ahead to get a functioning complete milsurp.

So, you pointed out something that was on my mind last night. I'm pre-1898; and technically it's an "antique" not a "firearm", no FFL, pretty sure felons can own it, ect; or am I off base? Could I trim it down a few inches and have a legal SBR antique?

No barrel shortening and no felons, feller! :)

Regards,

Josh

Most Mosins are dark bore. I clean them up by alternating foaming bore cleaner and Hoppes. What happens is that powder fouling gets layered on underneath copper fouling, then powder fouling on top of that, etc, in layers.

Rotate the cleaners. Generally, you can clean them up nicely.

Slug the bore. Nominally around 0.311", they come in between 0.3095" and 0.312" with some larger. They were designed for 0.311" bullets. Handloading can sometimes cut groups in half, depending on the particular rifle.

I find these do best in original wooden stocks with improved two-stage trigger, shimmed receiver and pressure padded barrel, and improved sights.

You might find this helpful. I hesitate to post it as I didn't come here to advertise, but I think I'm good with posting this article as it's pretty well circulated anyway:

I like doing experimental archaeology and have hunted with slings and such I've made myself, and the Mosin-Nagant and a few others from the late 19th Century are natural extensions of that hobby.

Regards,

Josh

OK, so a moderately related question. At on time I went through the trouble to get my C&R FFL. I know it's been years ago, and I never used it. Is there a way to find out if it's still good? I'm not sure I still have the original paper work, and if it hasn't expired, is there a way to get copies of everything from the Feds?

They expire after 3 years if you don't renew it. And when it expires you have to go through the whole process again.

Ok, I had assumed it expired, but I thought I'd ask.

What is everyone paying for FFL transfers, I was thinking about ordering a barreled receiver on Gunbroker

If you bought any firearm that's over 50 years old, then you 'used' it. If you are a license holder, and you acquire/dispose of any firearm of that age, then you are required to record out the transaction in your log. Just because you never presented your license when you purchased something doesn't exempt you from that. YOU are licensed and the license dictates what you must do. Not presenting the license upon a purchase doesn't mean you didn't use it.

It's just like a driver's license. Just because you never presented it to a cop, doesn't mean you never used it.

This has been clarified many times in many firearms forums and is covered in the pages of the book that the ATF sent when you received your license.

Of course, if you haven't made any purchases or sales at all of qualifying firearms, then of course you haven't used it. :)

Well, I've got a 1943 Izhevsk barreled receiver coming. I really was hoping for a prewar barrel but the timing was right, and price wasn't too wrong, $68, plus $12 shipping, plus I have to pay an FFL. Which has me thinking, maybe I should get my C&R again, with the DVD Dragunov hitting the 50 year mark (1963). And after all, who doesn't want an SVD.

I plan to use trigger, mag, and bolt from the Finn and the friends Russian M91/30 stock. I'll save the 1894 C Receiver for possible future sale or built.

Edit: what do y'all expect to pay for an FFL transfer and any required background. I'm guessing $25, or is that wishful thinking?

Barreled receivers don't count as C&R. Only full unaltered guns qualify.

Most places around here charge $25.

He said he didn't.

AND it's expried, and since C&R holders do not have to turn in their bound book and can simply toss them, then once expired, then none of the old data matters.
