You can clean glow plugs, and reinstall them. This is usually only necessary, when they have high hours.

However, once a glow plug starts to deform, you are right, it's time to replace it.

Glad you have it fixed.

Thanks Ray,

I read that cleaning was an option. I knew I had to replace that deformed one but I also noticed that all 3 had what looked like melted plastic towards the top of the plug. There is some kind of washer there that melted. So I wasn't sure if I would have been getting a good charge to the other 2 plugs. And for $16 a pop, I know that I have 3 new ones installed which seemed like a pretty good choice to me. I'm so happy it was just the plugs and my GC now starts like it should.

Please post the brand, and part number you used.

I assume they weren't OEM at $16?

Here's the link from where I bought them from. They were $19 instead of $16 (oops), but still not too bad. Glow Plug 3704242M1 3757093M1 - Rick's Ag Parts

Shipping is where these guys get you. I think I had to pay about 15 bucks to ship these. On Ebay the seller wanted Shipping X3. At least at Ricks the shipping cost stayed the same.

Good info, Eric, thanks for updating. Mine still starts OK, but now approaching 600 hrs… maybe I ought to take a peek at my glow plugs.

Oh-- and Ray, I'm still on the OEM battery. Don't know how much longer my luck will hold out; guess we'll see this winter!

If it makes it through this winter, it's not luck anymore. It's divine province.

I have about 550 hours, but the tractor was under 500 (450ish) when I bought it and was exhibiting this problem. So I have no clue what the hours were when the plugs went bad. The previous owner claimed he didn't ever start it in the winter.

I would expect them to last longer than 500 hrs.

You will likely have to add more glow plug heating time, as they age.

And, a periodic cleaning will keep them working at their best.

I did not expect them to have a lot of soot at 500hrs. So, I guess I will pull one of mine, and look at it when I get a chance.
