Diesel prices in your area?

That is America here. You don't buy what you need. You buy what you want. It keeps the economy running. I drive only second hand cars but I have a bicycle worth more than most cars I have ever owned.
My wife's secretary always drove a better car than she did. She lived in old dinky house with dinky yard but traded in her low miles car in pristine condition every two years to get new one. I guess it was only nice thing she owned. It put strain on her finances but made her happy.
If the guy can afford 400 HP truck so be it. Happiness is worth something.
Friend of mine let me drive his money pit highly modified Audi TT. It put a big smile on my face to mash the pedal making trees along the road looking like a picket fence. Would I like to have one of those. For sure. But I am cheap I guess. So I understand why 400 HP PU is fun to have.

You were doing well enough with a Wikipedia quote . Then it showed again how little you understand with and after the 400HP stuff. Tell me is there some NASCAR class for racing pickups and trailers ? Why are you roaring around like a madman with 400HP on a truck with a light weight trailer ? It's not a race . Tell us please how much towing has to be done in this light duty highway application to make the higher priced truck, higher priced service and higher priced fuel save $$$ over a light gas . Are you aware of the definitions of light, medium and heavy duty applications ?
I actually typed that all out. What does this have to do with anything anyway? You said a modern gas was equally as efficient or better at converting a btu of energy into mileage. Hook both engines to a high load application such as a generator, and see how that claim holds up. My argument was never if a gas was good enough. It was that a gas could not get as good of mileage towing a heavy load.

Problem of thermal lower efficiency of gasoline engine lies in the propensity of the fuel mixture to ignite explosively at certain pressure in the cylinder before the spark. It limits the compression ration to about 11. The problem can be overcome by direct injection. If the fuel isn't in the cylinder it can't detonate. It gets injected at measured rate at the proper time pretty much like in diesel engine. That way the compression ratio can be increased to diesel engine level. Diesel will still be better though. The engine doesn't have throttling loses and the diesel fuel contains more energy than gasoline per unit of volume.

Just a reminder that the title of this thread is "Diesel prices in your area?" and it's not "Gas vs. Diesel"

I saw a Valero with diesel at $2.099 yesterday in Lafayette, LA.

I've never understood why diesel is always more expensive than gasoline. It seems to me diesel is much less refined? Which should lower the cost. Would freight be possibly lower to ship with lower fuel prices translating to lower prices in stores? Back in the 80's diesel cars cost more new to buy, but got less than gas counterparts when sold.or traded in.
