AR 15

And I thought that I was the last person to get an AR....I had put it off for years because A. - They didn't really appeal to me (and I hadn't shot one) and B.) Everybody else had one, and I didn't want to be a conformist.

However, a local sporting goods store had their grand opening last fall and had a sale, and ended up (with the urging of my son) picking up a Del-Ton for about $500. I was fully prepared to dislike it and regret my purchase.

I was wrong.

I really do enjoy shooting it, and we have changed the stock, handguard, grip, added a couple of different sights, gotten more magazines, etc. It is my son's favorite rifle that we have (he claims it is going with him when he moves out - but that is still many, many years away).

From what I have read, Del-Ton is a low end manufacturer, but it seems fine for my purposes. I'm probably going to get another AR at some point, and I've thought about going the "build" route, just so that I can get the gun set up how I like it without having to discard pieces I don't like.

I don't think I've run into anybody that regretted getting an AR, but I'm sure there may be some out there.

Good luck and take care.

I could have written this same post. Other than my AR isn't a Del-ton. I love my Glocks and always thought my 12 ga would be a go to defense weapon. I think I'd rather have my AR, I'm much more confident with it.

That's what HiPoints are for :)

Since I was chastised a bit for that post..."throw it in the truck" wasn't to be taken literally. This rifle, like all my others, is handled properly. "Throw it in the truck" refers to it being carried most frequently.

I'm not chastising you my friend ... I have beater guns just for that kind of thing.

Brian I think a lot of folks have found that out by experience. The AR has next to no recoil and is still pretty effective. I still have 12 gauges for home defense, but I would not feel "unarmed" with a short AR-15 and a 30 rounder in it. At home defense ranges a 12 gauge with buckshot still has to be aimed, unlike what is shown on TV and movies. The pattern is about the size of your fist or less at across the room ranges.

But to think that the wound cavity from a 308 is nothing to worry about (or not man stopping) is about the most unusual thing I have ever heard from the battlefield.

There are a 100's of thousands of Germans, Japanese, Koreans, and VC's who could attest to the effectiveness of the 30-06 or .308, if they were able.

To say that the .223 is more effective, is almost laughable.

All I know is the several deer I have killed with my .308 dropped real quick, some on the spot they were standing, some ran a few yards, but all had big holes in them. Blood was sprayed out on the ground on the exit side. Granted I was using expanding SP ammo, not FMJ. But the .308/7.62x51 is a proven round.

Lighter calibers can drop them quick too. It's all about shot placement. :)

Maybe I should have clarified that I am only speaking about FMJ rounds. My guess is that few hunters would use that. I am sorry to say, that we used a lot of .223 and .308 FMJ to shoot ground hogs. Most ground hogs would go down their holes after being shot with the 308. Their guts would be strewn accross the field with the .223 round. The .223 has a tendency to tumble (and often break) upon hitting flesh.

My Government declared war on virtually any firearm that was parkarized, semi-automatic and had a pistol grip after Mark LaPean (sp?) shot those women in the technical college. He used a Mini 14 rifle, which the gun nuts later renamed the LaPean Machine!

I fired the Mini 14 with folding stock extensively, but prefer the feel of the AR 15. Shot the RARE AR 10 in 308 a bit too.

... I had to think of this in the wake of the French attacks. So many were wounded. They used soviet .223. Those could be some extremely nasty wounds!

I read on an European website that emergency services in Paris just happened to have a drill on the day of the attack. They had 400 ER doctors on duty due to the drill which had to have lowered the death count. It also seems that law enforcement did not delay in attacking the terrorists. The attack in Mali should have been much worse but the response was quick and effective unlike what happened in the last Tunisia attack. A quick response is needed to keep the death count low from the initial and return attacks as well as allowing the victims to get treatment ASAP. Unlike what happened at Columbine.

Later,
Dan
